#40 women's tennis downs UAA rivals #36 NYU, 5-2

WALTHAM, Mass. – The #40 Brandeis University women's tennis team picked up a key win for seeding in the University Athletic Association tournament, defeating #36-ranked NYU, 5-2, indoors in the Gosman Athletic Center. The match was played to decision as the Violets had a second competition later in the day.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges got off to a quick start in doubles, winning two of three matches. First-year Chahana Budhbhatti (Ahmedabad, India/Aavishkar School) and Cecilia Denis (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) opened the scoring with an 8-2 win at #3 over Hannah Chang and Tess Heber.
  • Junior Bhakti Parwani (Ahmedabad, India/Kumkum School) and sophomore Rebecca Suarez (Huntington, N.Y./International Virtual Learning Academy), ranked #2 in the Northeast region topped NYU's Dakota Fordham and Isabella Hartman, ranked #9 regionally, 8-4, at #1.
  • NYU got on the board at #2 with an 8-5 win by Molly Heber and Jimena Menendez, who topped Judge first-year Mandy Reyes (Barcelona, Spain/Laurel Springs School) and sophomore Nancy Zhang (Shanghai, China/Shanghai International).
  • Zhang bounced back to pick up the match's first singles win, 6-4, 6-2, at #3 over Hartman.
  • Budhbatti won, 6-4, 6-4, at #2 over Fordham to get Brandeis one point from victory.
  • NYU's Menendez – ranked sixth in the Northeast –  got the Violets on the board in singles with a comeback at #1, 6-7 (3-7), 6-1, 6-1.
  • Brandeis clinched the victory at #5, where junior Anastasia Sia (Thessaloniki, Greece/Anatolia College) rolled to a 6-3, 6-0, win.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges take on #29 Wellesley College on Sunday at 1 p.m., hoping to play the match outdoors in the Cordish Tennis Center.
