Baseball suffers DH sweep at CWRU, 8-0 and 7-3

CLEVELAND, Ohio – The Brandeis University baseball game dropped the middle two games of a University Athletic Association series at Case Western Reserve today, falling to the Spartans 8-0 in Game 1 of a doubleheader and 7-3 in Game 2.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 4-16, 0-3 UAA.
  • Case Western Reserve: 20-6, 6-1 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1
  • The Judges were limited to four hits in the opener, two from grad student RF Jake Freed (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson) and one each from grad student 3B Brian King (Palos Verde, Calif./Palos Verde) and sophomore catcher C.J. Dunston (New Bedford, Mass/New Bedford).
  • Meanwhile the Spartans put five runs on the board in the bottom of the first on just two hits, taking advantage of some early wildness from Judge first-year Cooper Gavin (Beverly, Mass./Beverly). After LF Logan Andreyko led off with a double, Gavin issued three straight walks with a pair of wild pitches mixed in. With the bases loaded, 1B Dane Camphausen hit his second home run in as many days for a grand slam, putting the hosts ahead, 5-0.
  • The Judges limited CWRU's offense to just six hits over the course of the game. The Spartans scored single runs in the fourth and fifth innings on sacrifice flies and another in the seventh on a double play.
  • Cooper took his first loss and first decision of the season, going four innings and allowing six earned runs on three hits, four walks and a hit batter. He struck out five.
  • Classmate Dimitri Skourides (Arlington, Mass./Winchendon School) went four innings of relief, giving up two runs on three hits and three walks and a hit batter with one K.
  • CWRU's Archer Stankowski earned the win and moved to 5-1 on the season. He went six innings, allowing two hits and one walk with nine strikeouts. Zach Barnes earned his second save with a three-inning relief outing, giving up two hits and a walk with four strikeouts.
  • Camphausen and RF Nick Harms were multiple hitters for the Spartans, each going 2-3. Camphausen homered and had four RBI, while Harms had a double and scored two runs.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2
  • The Spartans were efficient in scoring twice in the first inning of Game 2. Andreyko walked to lead off the game. He stole second, moved to third on a fly ball to right and scored on a wild pitch. Harms followed with a homer to right-center field to give CWRU a 2-0 lead.
  • They added single runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Harms doubled in a run in the third. In the fourth, LF Franco Alonso singled home a run. In the fifth, it was DH Jack Anderson who scored without a hit on a walk, a ground out, a steal of third and a wild pitch.
  • King tried to get the Brandeis offense started in the first and fourth innings, when he walked and got as far a third base, but the Judges couldn't get him home either time.
  • The Judges finally broke through in the sixth, as King singled through the right side to bring home Freed. A wild pitch plated senior 2B Mike DiCenso (Cranston, R.I./Moses Brown School), while junior catcher Justin Keeler (Seymour, Conn./St. Joseph's) drove in King with a groundout that cut Brandeis's deficit to 5-3.
  • A costly error in the eighth gave CWRU two more runs, making the final score 7-3.
  • King added two more hits to his total, driving in a run and scoring one. First-year LF Henry Aronwald (Rye Brook, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) also had two hits.
  • First-year Andrew Tringe (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier) took the loss on the hill for Brandeis, falling to 0-5 on the season. He threw six innings, allowing five hits and five earned runs. He struck out six and walked four.
  • Case's Quinn Saunders earned the win, improving to 3-0. He threw 5.1 innings, allowed three hits and two earned runs. Saunders walked two and struck out 10.
  • Harms led the offense with a 3-3 performance with a double, a home run, two RBI and two runs scored.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges and Spartans will wrap up their series tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. The start time was moved up from 11 a.m. to help avoid traveling issues.
