Softball sweeps NYU in DH to clinch series win

Judges down Violets, 9-0 and 11-9

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – The Brandeis University softball team had a pair of very different wins – one easy, one not – as the Judges swept a University Athletic Association doubleheader from host New York University, 9-0 and 11-9, at the College of Staten Island.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 16-19, 8-11 UAA.
  • NYU: 6-27, 1-18 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1 (Brandeis 9, NYU 0 – 5 innings)
  • The Judges were in control from start to finish in the opener today.
  • After a scoreless first inning, Brandeis senior 3B Haley Nash (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) blasted her 10th home run of the season to left field. It gave Nash just the fifth season with double-digit home runs in Brandeis history, and was the 29th of her career, moving her within two of the school record.
  • The Judges blew things open in the top of the third, sending 11 batters to the plate and scoring eight runs in the process. Sophomore CF Bells Burdenski (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) led off the frame with her ninth homer of the season. She also had a two-run double later in the inning.
  • Other big hits were an RBI double by junior SS Anna Kolb (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison) and a two-run single by junior 2B Fiona Doiron (Charlton, Mass./Marianapolis Prep).
  • That was all that senior Alex Cohen (West Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School) needed, as she held NYU to three hits for the second game in a row.
  • The only trouble she encountered was in the NYU third, when, with two outs, the Violets had a couple of infield singles and an error to put runners on the corners, but Cohen got a grounder to short to maintain the shutout.
  • Cohen, who faced four batters over the minimum tossed a five-inning complete game to improve to 7-11 on the season. She allowed three hits and struck out three with a hit batter. It was her 12th complete game of the season.
  • The win was her 31st of her career, moving into a tie for 8th on Brandeis's career list, while her 27th complete game is 15th and her 281 strikeouts are fifth.
  • Cohen also drew two walks and scored a run.
  • Burdenski finished the game going 2-2 with two runs and three RBI, a double and a home run, while Nash was 2-3 with two runs and two RBI and a homer. First-year 1B Brooke Boehmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon) was 2-3 with a double and a triple.
  • NYU's Monique Kamrowski took the loss to fall to 0-4 this season, allowing six run and six hits in 2.1 innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2 (Brandeis 11, NYU 9)
  • As tidy as Game 1 was, Game 2 was sloppy, as the teams combined for 20 runs on 19 hits, thanks to 10 errors and 17 walks issued.
  • The Violets took a 6-1 lead after just one inning, getting to Cohen for six runs over the first two innings, only two of which were earned.
  • Brandeis scored a lone run in the second on an infield grounder by sophomore LF Elle Ehrlich (). They added two more in the third thanks to an NYU error and a Nash sacrifice fly.
  • The Judges tied things up at 6-all in the fourth, when Kolb singled home two runs, while junior catcher Tristan Boyer (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) drew a bases-loaded walk to tie things up at 6-alll.
  • NYU used two Brandeis errors and two walks with just one hit to push their advantage back to 8-6.
  • After a scoreless fifth, the Judges capitalized on NYU miscues to score four runs on just one hit, thanks to two errors, two walks and two wild pitches by Violet pitcher Emily Stone.
  • Trailing 10-8, NYU's Madi Hand delivered an RBI double, but Brandeis limited the damage to one run, getting it back in the top of the seventh when Boyer scored on a passed ball.
  • Cohen came back on in relief of first-year Ariel Schachter (Dallas, Texas/Plano West) to retire the side in the seventh, earning her second career save in the process.
  • Schachter provided four innings of four-hit relief, allowing just three runs. She also gave up six walks to one strikeout as she earned her first collegiate win.
  • At the plate, Kolb overcame some issues in the field to help secure the win with a 4-5 performance, with two hits and two RBI. Boehmer was the only other multiple hitter for the Judges.
  • NYU shortstop Lindsey Barron went 2-4 with three runs scored.
  • Emily Stone took the loss for NYU, giving up three hits and four unearned runs. She falls to 0-5.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges and Violets will meet again tomorrow at 12 noon, pushed back an hour because of the lateness of tonight's games.
