#30 Women's tennis advances to fifth-place match with 5-1 win over #46 NYU

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The Brandeis University women's tennis team cruised past rivals New York University for the second time this season, 5-1, in the consolation semifinals of the 2024 University Athletic Association championships today at Sanlando Park in Florida. With the win, the #30 Judges will meet #15 Carnegie Mellon in the fifth-place match.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges got off to a fast start with a doubles sweep.
  • Junior Cecilia Denis (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) and first-year Chahana Budhbhatti (Ahmedabad, India/Aavishkar School) opened with an 8-4 win at #3.
  • Junior Sabrina Loui (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) and sophomore Nancy Zhang (Shangai, India/Shanghai International School) took an 8-5 win at #2.
  • The closest match of the doubles series came at #1, where Brandeis sophomore Rebecca Suarez (Huntington, N.Y./International Virtual Learning Academy) and junior Bhakti Parwani (Ahmedabad, India/Kumkum School), ranked #10 in Division III, bested the #24 team from the Violets, Isabella Hartman and Dakota Fordham, 8-6.
  • After NYU battled back from a 4-1 deficit to tie things at 4-all, the Judges won four of the final six games to improve to 18-3 on the season.
  • After Fordham got NYU on the board with a 6-1, 6-2, win at #2 over Budhbhatti, Loui and Zhang provided the two winning singles points for the Judges.
  • Loui won, 6-1, 6-1, over Kendal Kamerschen at #6 for Brandeis's fourth point, while Zhang won the clincher at #3, 6-1, 6-4, over Hartman.
  • With the team victory, Brandeis reached the 10-win plateau for the second year in a row and the 11th time in the last 12 full seasons.  
UP NEXT
  • The Judges will take on Carnegie Mellon tomorrow at 8:30 a.m. in the fifth-place match at the 2024 UAA tournament.
