#30 women's tennis finishes sixth at UAAs after 5-3 loss to #15 CMU

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The #30-ranked Brandeis University women's tennis team were edged by #15 Carnegie Mellon University in the fifth-place match today at the 2024 University Athletic Association tournament at Sanlando Park in Florida.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 10-9, ranked #30 in Division III by Intercollegiate Tennis Association
  • Carnegie Mellon: 13-6, ranked #15 in Division III by ITA
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Tartans swept the doubles matches, but the Judges were just points away from taking a 2-1 lead.
  • After CMU jumped out to an 8-2 win at #2, the Tartans won both #1 and #3 in a tiebreaker by identical 8-7 (8-6) scores. That included at #1, where CMU's  team of Sarah Yang and Danna Taylor handed Brandeis sophomore Rebecca Suarez (Huntington, N.Y./International Virtual Learning Academy) and junior Bhakti Parwani (Ahmedabad, India/Kumkum School), ranked #10 in Division III, just their second dual-match loss of the season.
  • In singles action, Yang defeated Parwani again, 6-0, 6-1, at #1, to give the Tartans a 4-0 lead.
  • The bottom of the Brandeis order cut into the Tartans's lead. First-year Like Bolkvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia/The European School-American High School) delivered a 6-2, 6-0, win at #4.
  • Junior Anastasia Sia (Thessaloniki, Greece/Anatoli College) picked up a 6-2, 6-2, win at #5, and classmate Sabrina Loui (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School), earned a 6-4, 6-2, victory at #6.
  • Carnegie Mellon clinched the win at #2, where Taylor picked up a 6-2, 6-4, win over first-year Chahana Budhbhatti (Ahmedabad, India/Aavishkar School).
UP NEXT
  • Brandeis returns their entire roster for the 2024-25 season.  The Judges hope to get a berth in the NCAA Division III Doubles tournament for their #1 tandem of Suarez and Parwani later this spring.
