#30 women's tennis falls in UAA quarters to #7 WashU, 5-1

ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, Fla. – The Brandeis University women's tennis team dropped its University Athletic Association tournament opener today, 5-1, at the hands of Washington University at Sanlando Park in Florida. The Judges were seeded sixth in the tournament and ranked #30 in Division III by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association, while the Bears were seeded third and ranked #7 in Division III.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges picked up a key victory at #1 doubles, where sophomore Rebecca Suarez (Huntington, N.Y./International Virtual Learning Academy) and junior Bhakti Parwani (Ahmedabad, India/Kumkum School) defeated WashU's Eliana Hanna and Amber Edmonds, 8-5.
  • The Brandeis duo are ranked #10 in Division III by the ITA as they improved to 17-3 on the season. The WashU pair are ranked #19.
  • The Bears took the other two doubles matches. Karen Gao and Eleanor Archer topped Brandeis junior Sabrina Loui (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) and sophomore Nancy Zhang (Shanhai, China/Shanhai International), 8-2, at #2.
  • In the closest of the three matches, the Bears prevailed, 8-6, at #3, as Emily Chiasson and Ainsley Heidbreder knocked off junior Cecilia Denis (Ardmore, Pa./Lower Merion) and first-year Chahana Budhbhatti (Ahmedabad, India/Aavishkar School).
  • The Bears clinched victory with straight-set wins at #2, #3 and #4 singles. Loui was up a set on Chiasson at #6 and junior Anastasia Sia (Thessaloniki, Greece/Anatoli College) had taken the first set at #5 when the match ended.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges will meet #46 NYU in the consolation semifinals tomorrow at 12:30 pm. The Judges defeated the Violets, 5-2, earlier this season.
