The senior earned her 30th career win thanks to a game-winnng triple

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Brandeis University softball senior pitcher Alex Cohen (West Palm Beach, Fla./Benjamin School) earned a milestone win in the circle after delivering the game-winning hit at the plate as the Judges defeated host New York University in a University Athletic Association series opener at the College of Staten Island.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 14-19, 6-11 UAA.
  • NYU: 6-25, 1-16 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After giving up two runs to NYU in the bottom of the first on a two-run single by Violet DP Alexa Very, Cohen only allowed one more hit the rest of the way.
  • The Violets' Karleigh Kluever kept the Brandeis offense in check over the first six innings. She escaped a first-and-third situation with one out in the third by getting a double play, then did not allow another runner until the seventh.
  • With one out in the top of the frame, senior 3B Haley Nash (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) chopped a ball at the plate but was safe on an error by the catcher.
  • After a fielder's choice brought Brandeis down to its last out, Kluever issued a walk to first-year 1B Brooke Boehmer (Pittsburgh, Pa./Mount Lebanon). Junior Tristan Boyer (Chesapeake, Va./Grassfield) singled through the left side, scoring junior shortstop Anna Kolb (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison).
  • That brought up Cohen, who delivered with a triple to right-center field to give the Judges a 3-2 lead. After Kluever issued a walk, NYU's Emily Stone came on to get the last out of the frame, keeping it a one-run game.
  • Cohen retired NYU in order in the seventh to earn the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Cohen was the star of the game. As a pitcher, she tied her season-high with seven strikeouts, allowing just three hits and two earned runs with one walk over seven innings of work. It was her 11th complete game of the season.
  • Cohen improved to 6-11 on the season, earning her 30th career win, becoming the 10th player in school history to reach that milestone. Cohen also moved into fifth place on the career strikeout list with 276 and set a career-best as reached 101.1 innings pitched for the season.
  • At the plate, Cohen delivered the game's only extra-base hit with her two-run triple. She also has a walk among her three plate appearances.
  • There were no multiple hitters in the game for either team.
  • Kluever was the hard-luck loser for NYU, allowing four hits and three unearned runs in 6.2 innings of work. She walked three and struck out one. She falls to 1-7 this season.
