Baseball edged by Amherst, 4-3

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team was unable to take advantage of seven errors committed by visiting Amherst College tonight as the Judges dropped a 4-3 decision to the Mammoths on Stein Diamond.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 5-27.
  • Amherst: 19-8.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The teams combined for 17 hits, but also 10 errors – seven by the visitors and three by the home team.
  • Amherst opened the scoring the first when leftfielder Jack Dove reached on an error at second base, stole second and scored on a single by rightfielder Charlie LaFreniere.
  • The Judges answered with two in the bottom of the frame. First-year centerfielder Connor Crowley (Guilford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven) and first-year right fielder Henry Aronwald (Rye Brook, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) led off with singles. First-year shortstop Dylan Walsh (Arlington, Mass./Arlington) laid down a perfect sacrifice bunt, beating the throw to first, while a wild throw by the pitcher allowed the tying run to come home.
  • With two runners still in scoring position, the Judges ran into a bit of bad luck when first-year Matt Chafin's (Canton, Mass./Canton) line drive was turned into a double play, but Amherst's second error the inning, on a ball hit by first-year catcher Patrick Schultz (Milton, Mass./Roxbury Latin) allowed Aronwald to score a go-ahead run.
  • The Mammoths got both runs back in the top of the third, as Dove delivered an RBI groundout to tie the game and third baseman Tyler McCord singled home the go-ahead run.
  • Brandeis threatened in the bottom of the inning, but a 6-4-3 double play got the visitors out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam.
  • Amherst added a key insurance run in the top of the fifth, when shortstop Ryan McIntyre singled and moved to second on a bobble in the outfield. Back-to-back grounders got McIntyre home, with Dove picking up the RBI.
  • The visitors left the bases loaded in the top of the seventh, and Brandeis scored their third run in the bottom of the inning. Chafin singled to lead off, and Schultz reached on an error at second base.
  • Graduate student leftfielder Jake Freed (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson) showed bunt, but slapped the ball past the first baseman. The Mammoths' second baseman was covering and stepped on first for one out, but he threw wildly to try to get the runner from first, allowing Chafin to score. Brandeis was unable to get the tying run home from third, as Tyson Luna got a pair of strikeouts to end the threat.
  • Brandeis had one last chance in the bottom of the ninth, when Chafin was hit by a pitch with one away, and Freed reach on an error with two down, but Jack Sampedro closed the door with a strikeout to end the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Brandeis saw Crowley and Walsh each finish with two hits, while DH Jack McDermott and McCord each had three hits for the Mammoths. There were no extra-base hits in the game.
  • The Judges used a quartet of pitchers to limit the Mammoth offense. First-year Dimitri Skourides (Arlington, Mass./Winchendon School) took the loss falling to 0-3. He allowed five hits and three runs (two earned) in 2.2 innings of work. He had no walks or strikeouts but did hit three batters.
  • First-year Jansen Landen (Swampscott, Mass./Austin Prep) went 2.1 innings, allowing two hits an one unearned run with four strikeouts, while classmate Kyle Murray (West Roxbury, Mass./Boston Latin) tossed 1.2 innings, allowing two hits and striking out two. Graduate student Brian King (Palos Verde, Calif./Palos Verde) allowed just one hit in 2.1 innings, walking two and striking out two.
  • Matt Tabet earned the win for the Mammoths, going six innings and allowing seven hits and three unearned runs. He walked one and struck out one. Luna went two hitless innings with three Ks, while Sampedro earned his second save with a pair of strikeouts and one hit batter.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges head to Atlanta on Friday to open up a four-game University Athletic Association series with Emory University.
