Baseball drops two more to WashU, 13-1 and 8-3

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team dropped both ends of a University Athletic Association doubleheader with visiting Washington University today. The Bears won Game 1, 13-1, in eight innings, and took the nightcap, 8-3. The games were played at Yetten Field in Waltham due to wet field conditions at Brandeis's Stein Diamond.

HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1 (WashU 13, Brandeis 1)
  • Brandeis got on the board first in Game 1 on a solo home run by graduate student 1B Eddie Zanor (Branford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven), his team-leading fifth of the season.
  • It was all WashU after that. The Bears tied the game in the top of the second on an RBI double by centerfielder Brandon Buday.
  • Judge sophomore starter Andrew Tringe (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier) held the visitors in check in the next two innings, but the Bears broke things open with a five-run fifth. 3B Evan Minarovich put WashU ahead for good with an RBI single, while catcher Connor Lindsey hit a three-run home run later in the inning to make it 6-1.
  • The Bears scored three runs in the sixth on a bases-loaded walk to leftfielder Sam Polk and a two-run single by DH Justin Zachery that pushed the lead to 9-1.
  • The Bears scored five times in the top of the eighth to exceed the UAA's ten-run rule.
  • Brandeis finished with six hits to WashU's 16. Zanor's home run was Brandeis's only extra-base hit, while grad student rightfielder Jake Freed (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson) was the only multiple hitter, going 2-3.
  • All nine of Washington's starters had at least one hit, with Zachery leading the way by going 4-5 with two RBI, three runs scored and a double. Lindsey's three RBI were a team-high.
  • Tringe took the loss for the Judges, going five innings and allowing 10 hits and six earned runs. He struck out four with no walks and one hit batter. He falls to 0-7 on the season.
  • First-year Anderson Gomez improved to 4-0 for the Bears, scattering six hits over seven innings, allow just one earned run. He fanned five without a walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2 (WashU 8, Brandeis 3)
  • Both teams had six hits in the second game of the doubleheader, but the Bears were able to take advantage of Brandeis wildness to put together a couple of three-run frames that made the difference.
  • The Bears scored three runs on just one hit in the second. After a walk, an infield single and a stolen base, a Brandeis error allowed the first run of the game to score. Anthony Equale delivered a sacrifice fly, and another wild pitch brought home the third run of the frame.
  • Brandeis got one run back on an RBI single by first-year shortstop Matt Chafin (Canton, Mass./Canton) in the fourth, but the Judges stranded a runner on third.
  • WashU scored three more runs in the fifth with just two hits, including a solo home run by Carson Cleage. Zachery was hit by a pitch, followed by a Minarovich double, with runs coming home on a wild pitch and a Buday sac fly.
  • Zanor delivered a sac fly of his own in the bottom of the fifth, making the score 6-2.
  • After the next three innings were quiet, WashU tacked on two runs in the top of the of ninth on a two-run single by Minarovich.
  • Brandeis loaded the bases in the bottom of the ninth, scoring on an RBI single by centerfielder Connor Crowley (Guilford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven), but the Bears' closer Clayton Miller got a strikeout with the bases loaded to earn his sixth save of the season.  
  • Though both teams had six hits, three of WashU's went for extra bases. They were paced by Cleage's 2-5 performance with a double, a home run, one RBI and one run scored. Minarovic finished going 2-3 with two walks, a double, two RBI and two runs scored.
  • Grad student 3B Brian King (Palos Verde, Calif./Palos Verde) was 2-4 with a run scored for the Judges.
  • Brandeis sophomore Cooper Gavin (Beverly, Mass./Beverly) took the loss on the hill, going 4.1 innings and allowing four runs on just three hits. He struck out four and walked three, while also hitting three batters to fall to 0-2. First-year Jansen Landen (Swampscott, Mass./Austin Prep) had a similar line in relief, tossing 4.2 innings of three-hit ball. He also allowed four earned runs, striking out three with one walk and three hit batters. The pair also combined for five wild pitches.
  • WashU's Hank Weiss improved to 3-2 with 4.1 innings of stellar relief, allowing just one hit and one earned run. He walked three and hit a batter, but struck out six. Will Henkel started for the Bears and went four innings, allowing four hits and one earned run, walking two and fanning five.

  • The Judges and Bears meet in the series finale tomorrow at 11 a.m. The game will be played at Yetten Field in Waltham.
