HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two teams were held in check by the starting pitchers, Brandeis's Marc Maestri (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) and Washington's Sebastian Guzman.

  • The visitors extended their lead to 4-0 in the fifth on a two-run double by 1B Harr Mauterer and a single by 2B Clayton Miller.
  • Brandeis got one run back in the bottom of the fifth when first-year RF Henry Aronwald (Rye Brook, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) singled, moved to second on a wild pickoff and scored two batters later on a sacrifice fly by classmate SS Matt Chafin (Arlington, Mass./Arlington).
  • Brandeis managed just one hit the rest of the way, while WashU added the game's final run in the top of the ninth on a lead-off single by CF Brandon Buday. He moved to second on a wild pitch and came home after stealing third and the catcher's throw sailed into left field.
