WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University baseball first-year right fielder
Henry Aronwald (Rye Brook, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) had a career game today, going 4-5 with two doubles, two RBI and three runs scored in helping the Judges to an 11-3 victory over Dean College in the first-ever meeting between the two schools on the diamond.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis: 5-22.
- Dean: 7-19.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Judges got contributions from their entire lineup, in more ways than one. All nine starters had at least one hit and either a run scored or an RBI.
- Brandeis also used four infielders on the mound to limit Dean to three runs on six hits.
- Brandeis got all the scoring it would need in the first two innings, scoring three in the first and two more in the second. Aronwald's first double drove home a run in the first, and he scored a batter later on a single by first-year 2B Dylan Walsh (Arlington, Mass./Arlington). A run also scored on an infield groundout by grad student 3B Brian King (Palos Verde, Calif./Palos Verde).
- After Dean loaded the bases on two walks and a single in the top of the second without converting, an error with two runners in scoring position on a ball hit by grad student pitcher Eddie Zanor (Branford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven) made it 5-0 Brandeis.
- The Bulldogs got on the board in the third, scoring two runs without a hit, thanks to four walks, a hit batter and a sacrifice fly. They left the bases loaded for a second-straight inning, as senior 2B Mike DiCenso (Cranston, R.I./Moses Brown) came on in relief of Zanor to get out of the jam.
- Aronwald singled to lead off the third and scored four batters later on a single to third base by sophomore catcher C.J. Dunston (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford), making the score 6-2 in favor of the hosts.
- King singled and Aronwald doubled with one out in the fourth, and both scored on a sacrifice fly by Walsh and a single by first-year SS Matt Chafin (Canton, Mass./Canton), pushing the lead to 8-2.
- Brandeis finished its scoring in the fifth on a Zanor sac fly, a successful double steal executed by DiCenso and first-year CF Connor Crowley (Guilford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven)¸ and Aronwald's second RBI of the day on a single up the middle.
- Dean scored one more run in the sixth, but Walsh came from second base to relieve DiCenso without allowing any more damage.
- The pitching staff settled down the rest of the way, with King coming onto the mound from third base to throw a scoreless eighth and ninth.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- Brandeis's 15 hits in the game were their second-most this season, while their 11 runs marked their third-highest total, as the Judges won for the first time since March 21st.
- In addition to Aronwald's big game, Crowley also had three runs scored, while King and first-year left fielder Tobei Nakajima (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) each scored twice. Walsh was the only other Judge with multiple RBI, driving in two.
- Zanor started on the hill, throwing 2.1 innings. He allowed just one hit, but walked five and hit two batters, allowing two earned runs.
- DiCenso threw three innings of two-hit ball to earn the win, improving him to 1-0. He allowed one earned run, struck out one and walked two.
- Walsh (1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R) and King (2.0 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 2 K) were also terrific in their spot relief appearances.
- Dean RF Jacob Paschetto was their only multiple hitter, going 2-4 with a run scored.
- Zach Brown took the loss for the visitors, falling to 1-3 on the season after giving up eight hits and six runs (four earned) in 2.1 innings.
