Loui leads #28 women's tennis past #44 Skidmore, 5-4

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's tennis team rode a doubles sweep to a 5-4 triumph over #44 Skidmore College today, with junior Sabrina Loui (Honolulu, Hawaii/Punahou School) clinching the win with a come-from-behind victory at #5 singles.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 8-6, ranked #28 in Division III by Intercollegiate Tennis Association.
  • Skidmore: 7-5, ranked #44 in Division III by ITA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brandeis got off to a fast start in this one, winning all three doubles matches indoors in the Gosman Athletic Center.
  • Junior Bhakti Parwani (Ahmedabad, India/Kumkum School) and sophomore Rebecca Suarez (Huntington, N.Y./International Virtual Learning Academy) rolled to an 8-1 victory at #1, improving to 15-2 on the year in the process, 10-0 in dual matches.
  • Junior Cecilia Denis (Ardmore, Pa/Lower Merion) and first-year Chahana Budhbhatti (Ahmedabad, India/Aavishkar School) picked up an 8-4 win at #3.
  • Loui and sophomore Nancy Zhang (Shanghai, China/Shanghai International) finished the sweep at #2, 8-5.
  • Skidmore quickly got back into the match with 6-1, 6-1, wins at #4 and #6, as the match movd outdoors to the Cordish Tennis Center.
  • Zhang picked up a 6-3, 6-4, win at #2 singles to move Brandeis within a point of clinching.
  • The Thoroughbreds responded with a 7-5, 6-3, win at #1 singles to get within 4-3, as the final two matches came down to third sets.
  • Skidmore's Katie Wong defeated Brandeis first-year Lika Bolkvadze (Tbilisi, Georgia/The European-School American High School), 4-6, 6-4, 6-1, at #3 to even things up.
  • In the clinching match, Loui won the first set, 6-1, but lost the second to Katherine Almquist, 4-6. Almquist led the third set, 4-1, but Loui rallied to win six of the last seven games for a 7-5 win and the 5-4 team victory.

  • The Judges will travel down Route 16 to meet #20-ranked Babson tomorrow at 10 a.m. This time is moved up from an originally-stated 1:30 p.m. first serve.
