Softball opens UAA season with 4-2 win over WashU

ST. LOUIS, Mo. – The Brandeis University softball team kicked off its 2024 University Athletic Association schedule today with a 4-2 victory over Washington University in St. Louis, taking advantage of five Bear walks to score three of their four runs.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After leaving two runners on base in each of the first two innings, the Judges broke through in the third.
  • After loading the bases on three walks, senior DP Alex Cohen (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) made WashU pay with a single to left-center field that made it 2-0.
  • Brandeis added their third run in the fifth inning when senior 3B Haley Nash (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) drew a one-out walk and scored from first base on a double to left-center by sophomore 2B Anna Kolb (Alexandria, Va. / Thomas A. Edison).
  • In the sixth inning, first-year Hannah Fletcher (Bethany,Conn./Amity Regional) belted her first collegiate home run as a pinch hitter to lead off the frame, increasing the lead to 4-2.
  • Meanwhile, in the circle, sophomore Ragini Kannan (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) held WashU hitless until the fourth inning and had a shutout going until the sixth. The Bears led off the inning with a single. Three batters later, Natalie Pilpil drove a ball over the left-field fence to cut Brandeis's lead in half, 4-2.
  • Kannan got the final out of the frame by strikeout, the worked around a lead-off double in the seventh, finishing with two more Ks to secure the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Brandeis outhit WashU, 7-4, and made the most of the five walks they drew, as three of them scored.
  • Cohen (2-4, 2 RBI) and Kolb (2-3, BB, 2B, RBI) were the only multiple hitters in the game, while Kolb and Fletcher's double and homer were the Judges' only extra-base hits.
  • Kannan recorded her sixth complete game of the season and the 20th of her career to improve to 3-3 on the season. She struck out five and walked just one, allowing four hits and two earned runs.
