TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis: 6-8, 2-1 UAA.
- Washington U.: 12-7, 1-2 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1
- In the opener, the teams traded runs over the first three innings.
- WashU opened the scoring in the first on a solo home run by designated player Sydney Schneider.
- Brandeis answered in the second when a hustling senior 3B Haley Nash (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) scored from second on a groundout by classmate and pitcher Alex Cohen (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School).
- The Bears took advantage of a Brandeis error in the third, as RF Erin Reardon reached on a leadoff error and scored four batters later on a single by SS Taylor Geluck. WashU loaded the bases with one out on a walk, but Cohen got a strikeout and a liner to left to get out of the inning.
- Both teams left runners in scoring position in the fourth inning, and the Bears cut down a run at the plate in the fifth to keep their 2-1 lead.
- WashU blew things open with five runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-1 lead.
- They added an insurance run in the sixth without benefit of a hit to take an 8-1 lead.
- The Judges made things interesting in the top of the seventh thanks to two hits and two errors, scoring three times, but the Bears hung on for the win.
- WashU's Maria Brooks earned the win in the circle with seven innings of work, allowing five hits and four runs (three earned). She struck out three and walked three, improving to 5-1.
- Cohen fell to 2-5 on the season despite tossing a six-inning complete game. She allowed 10 hits and eight runs (seven earned). She struck out two and walked four.
- Brandeis sophomore RF Maddie Manes (San Clemente, Calif./San Juan Hills) had the only multiple-hit game for the Judges, while classmate LF Elle Ehrlich (Falls Church, V./Meridian) had the team's only extra-base hit, a double.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2
- Game two looked like it was going to be a slugfest from the start, as the teams combined for 11 runs in the first inning.
- Brandeis scored six times in the top of the frame, sending 11 batters to the plate. They had five hits and took advantage of a walk and a hit batter with the bases loaded to drive in two of their runs.
- Junior 2B Fiona Doiron (Charlton, Mass./Marianapolis Prep.) had an RBI single, while sophomore CF Bells Burdenski (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) had two hits in the frame, including a two-run single that chased starter Emma Urban
- WashU, which was held in check by Brandeis sophomore Ragini Kannan (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) yesterday, answered with five runs on six hits in the bottom of the frame to close within 6-5.
- Kannan settled down after the first inning, holding the Bears to three hits the rest of the way, allowing just one runner past second base and just one more past first.
- Brandeis tacked on a couple of insurance runs in the third on a two-out, two-run single by sophomore SS Anna Kolb (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison). The Judges stranded runners in each of their final four at-bats, but Kannan kept WashU in check to maintain the three-run lead.
- Kannan improved to 4-3 on the season with her seventh complete game. She allowed nine hits and five runs, striking out three without a walk.
- At the plate, Burdenski became the first Judge in at least 20 years to record five hits in a single game. She went 5-5 with a run scored and two RBI.
- Manes and Kolb each had three hits, as the Judges had 13 hits in total, all singles. Eight different Brandeis players scored runs in the game.
- WashU's Urban fell to 0-3 after allowing five hits and six earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning. Schneider added three more hits, including a double.
