Lasell takes Battle of Stein Diamond, 5-2, over baseball

WALTHAM, Mass. – In a showdown between the two schools who play their home games on Stein Diamond, it was visiting Lasell who emerged with a 5-2 victory over host Brandeis today.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 4-10.
  • Lasell: 11-7.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brandeis opened the scoring in the bottom of the first thanks to a trio of graduate students. With two away, 1B Eddie Zanor (Branford, Conn. / Notre Dame-West Haven) drew a walk. He moved to second on a single by 3B Brian King (Palos Verde, Calif./Palos Verde) and scored on a single by RF Jake Freed (Vernon Hills, Ill. / Stevenson).
  • The Lasers answered in the top of the second. Bryan Baumann led off with a double and scored three batters later on Jared Whitby single.
  • Lasell went ahead for good in the top of the fifth when Brad Edwards singled through the left side to plate CJ Mills.
  • The visitors added three crucial insurance runs in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Edwards and a two-base error in left field that allowed two runs to score on a ball hit by Connor Freitas.
  • Brandeis had their chances to score in the game, leaving runners on in all but one of their at-bats. They were not able to cash in again until the bottom of the ninth, when they loaded the bases on two walks and a Zanor single.
  • With the bases loaded, sophomore Jordan Greenaway (Clifton, N.J. / Morristown Beard School) drove a pitch to the wall in left. Off the bat, it looked like it might be a game-tying grand slam, but it stayed in the park, and the Judges' runners were only able to advance one base each as they waited to see if the ball was caught.
  • With the deficit down to three runs at 5-2, Lasell reliever Pierce Clare came on and kept Brandeis at bay, getting two flies to shallow left and a strikeout to end the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The teams combined for 19 hits in this one, 10 for Lasell and nine for Brandeis.
  • The Judges were paced by King, who went 2-3, and Freed, who was 2-5 with a double and an RBI.
  • Zanor reached base four times in five plate appearances, going 1-2 with three walks.
  • First-year Connor Crowley (Guilford, Conn. / Notre Dame-West Haven) also had a double for Brandeis.
  • Three Laser players each had two hits, topped by Edwards, who was 2-4 with two RBI. Baumann had a double for the visitors' only extra-base hit.
  • Brandeis first-year pitcher Tyler Hill (Lansdale, Pa / La Salle College High School) threw the first inning-and-a-third, making his collegiate debut. He allowed three hits and one earned run, striking out two and walking one.
  • Senior Sean Decker-Jacoby (Los Angeles, Calif./Visitmar) had a fine relief outing, establishing new career-highs with 7.2 innings of work and nine strikeouts. He allowed seven hits and four runs (two earned) and did not walk a batter. He threw 103 pitches, 75 for strikes, but suffered the loss to fall to 1-3 on the season.
  • Lasell first-year starter Ty Lohsen went four innings and gave up three hits and a run, walking three and striking out three. Senior Darek Lallo worked a scoreless fifth to earn the win and improve to 3-0, while Clare's effort earned him his first save of the season.
