WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University baseball graduate student
Marc Maestri (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) tossed a complete-game five-hitter against WPI in Game 1 and doubled in his first collegiate at-bat, but the Judges fell in both games against the Engineers, 1-0 and 13-1, today on Stein Diamond.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis: 4-12.
- WPI: 12-7.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1
- Maestri was a hard-luck loser for the second game in a row, falling to 2-3 on the season.
- Maestri allowed just five hits and struck out five without a walk in seven innings of work in his second-straight complete game.
- He was on the wrong end of a Brandeis shutout for the second week in a row after the Judges lost to Wheaton, 2-0, last Friday.
- The only real trouble Maestri faced came in the top of the third inning, when WPI shortstop Jacob Hand led off with a double and RF Andrew Cash followed with a two-bagger of his own to drive in the game's only run.
- Maestri retired 14 of the last 16 batters he faced to give the Judges a chance to tie the game.
- Brandeis had trouble solving WPI pitchers Noah Pins and Eric DiPiero, as they got only one runner as far as second base over the first six innings.
- In the bottom of the seventh against DiPiero, Judge grad student Jake Freed (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson) led off with a double and was bunted to third, putting the tying run 90 feet away.
- DiPiero ended the game with a strikeout and a tapper back to the mound, earning his first save of the season. Pins improved to 4-1 on the season by holding Brandeis to two hits over the first 5 innings. He struck out eight and walked two. DePiero allowed one hit and fanned two in his two innings of work.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2
- Game two was not as dramatics, as WPI scored multiple runs in three different innings,
- Hand was one of two big hitters for the Engineers in the contest, delivering a grand slam in their five-run second inning. He also had a bases-loaded walk and a sacrifice fly in the game finishing 1-3 with six RBI.
- Cash added a two-run home run in the Engineers' three-run fifth inning.
- 1B Jonathan Lattimer went 4-4 with three runs scored and two RBI and a double, while catcher Matt Shea also scored three runs.
- Brandeis's lone run came in the bottom of the third inning, when first-year Tobei Nakajima (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) led off with a single and moved to second on an errant pick-off throw and third on a wild pitch. He scored on sophomore catcher CJ Dunston's (New Bedford, Mass./New Bedford) sacrifice fly.
- In the fifth inning, Maestri went in as a pinch hitter and delivered a double in his first collegiate at-bat, but Brandeis could not advance him any further. Maestri's hit was one of just four for the Judges in the second game.
- WPI pitcher Andrew Gray improved to 2-1 on the season, throwing five innings of three-hit ball. He allowed one run and struck out two without a walk.
- Brandeis first-year Andrew Tringe (Montpelier, Vt./Montpelier) suffered the loss, allowing five hits and eight runs (six earned) in 2.1 innings of action. He struck out four and walked two.
