Softball sweeps Wentworth in New England debut, 4-0 and 11-3

BOSTON, Mass. – The Brandeis University softball team shook off the rust of a three-week stretch between games to defeat host Wentworth Institute of Technology in a pair of games in Boston today. The Judges took a 4-0 decision in the opener behind a dominant pitching performance, then scored 10 runs in the final two innings for an 11-3 win in Game 2.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 3-3.
  • Wentworth: 4-8.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1
  • Senior pitcher Alex Cohen (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) was the story of the game in the opener, tossing a complete-game one-hitter.
  • Cohen struck out seven and walked four, allowing one hit in the fourth inning.
  • She threw 100 pitches in her second complete game of the season and the 17th of her career. It was also her fourth career shutout
  • Cohen improved to 1-2 on the season and became the 14th player in school history to reach the 25-win plateau for her career.
  • Offensively, Brandeis got all the scoring they would need in the top of the first inning, when sophomore CF Erin Hunt (Wake Forest, N.C./Franklin Academy) led off with a single, stole second and scored on a single to right by sophomore RF Maddie Manes (San Clemente, Calif./San Juan Hills).
  • The Judges loaded the bases in the fourth but couldn't score, and Cohen worked out of a bases-loaded jam of her own in the bottom of the frame after issuing two walks in addition the Leopards' lone hit from WIT's Jess Rowe. Cohen got a strikeout to keep the home team off the board.
  • Brandeis stranded two more runners in the fifth, but they finally got Cohen some breathing room in the top of the seventh thanks to an RBI double by Manes, followed two batters later by a home run from senior Haley Nash (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central). It was Nash's third homer of the season.
  • Manes was the offensive star with a career-high three hits in four at-bats, two doubles and two RBI.
  • In addition to her home run, Nash had Brandeis's other two RBI, and she and first-year DP Hannah Fletcher (Bethany,Conn./Amity Regional) each had two hits.
  • Wentworth's Julie Schriver took the loss, falling to 4-5 on the season, despite striking out 12 Brandeis batters and allowing just one earned run.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2
  • The second game looked to be another pitcher's duel through the first four innings, with the only runner to get past second base came in the top of the second.
  • With two out after the Leopards turned a 5-4-3 double play, sophomore 3B Anna Kolb (Alexandria, Va./Thomas A. Edison) doubled and scored on a single to center by sophomore LF Elle Ehrlich (Falls Church, Va./Meridian).
  • The Judges broke things open in the fourth thanks to some wildness from the WIT pitcher. Junior 2B Fiona Doiron (Charlton, Mass./Marianapolis) singled home the first run of the frame. Bases-loaded walks to Manes and sophomore SS Bells Burdenski (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) and a sacrifice fly by Nash pushed the lead to 5-0.
  • Wentworth rallied for their first runs of the day in the bottom of the frame, with an RBI single by LF Brianna Miller opening the scoring and a two-run double by catcher Kelsey Medalia getting the Leopards within 5-3. Brandeis sophomore starter Ragini Kannan (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) got the last two outs on infield grounders to escape further damage.
  • Brandeis ended the game early by sending 12 batters to the plate in the top of the sixth and scoring six more runs on five hits, three walks and one hit batter. Hunt and Manes had single RBI on a single and sacrifice fly, while Burdenski drove in two with a double.
  • Nash closed out the scoring in the inning and the game with her second home run of the day, a two-run blast to center. It was the fourth of her season and the 23rd of her career, moving her into a tie for fourth on the Judges' all-time list.
  • Kannan worked around a couple of Wentworth singles in the sixth to close out the Judges' second complete game of the day.
  • The Judges finished with nine hits, two each from Doiron, Ehrlich and Hunt.
  • Burdenski and Nash each drove in three for Brandeis.
  • In four plate appearances, Nash had two walks, a sacrifice fly and a home run.
  • She finished the day going 3-5 at the plate with five RBI, two runs, two home runs, a double and two walks across the two contests.
  • Nash has hit safely in all six Brandeis games this season and has raised her batting average to .588 on the season (10-17).
  • Kannan improved to 2-1 on the campaign, allowing seven hits and three earned runs in six innings. She fanned three and walked one, throwing 84 pitches. It was her 17th career complete game.
  • Wentworth's Sydney Miccile and Kaitlin Pettinger each had two hits, while Miller's double was their only extra-base hit.
  • Jess Rowe fell to 0-3 in the circle for the Leopards, allowing four hits and five walks in 5.0 innings of work, giving up five runs (three earned) with just one strikeout.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges face 17th-ranked MIT on Tuesday in a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m. in Cambridge.
