Softball drops a pair at #17 MIT, 5-2 and 4-2

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Brandeis University softball team fell victim to a couple of big innings today as the Judges dropped a pair of close contests to MIT, ranked 17th in the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Division III poll. The Engineers won Game 1, 5-2, and Game 2, 4-2.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 3-5.
  • MIT: 2-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1
  • In the opener, Brandeis senior Alex Cohen (West Palm Beach, Fla./The Benjamin School) held MIT to one hit through the first four innings.
  • The Judges had base runners of their own through the first five frames, but were unable to convert. In the top of the fifth, they loaded the bases with one out, but MIT pitcher Caroline Langmeyer induced a grounder to second base that the Engineers turned into a force at the plate, followed by a fly-out to right.
  • MIT took advantage in the bottom of the frame, getting to Cohen for five hits, with an error mixed in, to score five times and take a 5-0 lead.
  • The Judges were able to tag Langmeyer for a couple of runs in the top of the seventh, with first-year DP Hannah Fletcher (Bethany,Conn./Amity Regional) roping a two-run double with two out, but that was as much as the visitors were able to produce as Langmeyer closed out the win.
  • Brandeis had five hits, and the Judges drew seven walks, but they were unable to find the big hit, stranding 10 runners.
  • Sophomore LF Bells Burdenski (San Diego, Calif./Rancho Bernardo) was the team's only multiple hitter, going 2-4 with a double. Senior Haley Nash (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) walked three times in four plate appearances and scored a run.
  • Cohen was the tough-luck loser, throwing a six-inning complete game to fall to 1-3 on the season. She allowed six hits and five runs (three earned), struck out seven and walked just one, with one hit batter.
  • MIT's Mackenzie Relihan was 1-2 with a double and two RBI. She was also hit by a pitch.
  • Langmeyer earned the win with seven innings of work to improve to 1-0. She allowed five hits and two unearned runs, walking seven and striking out eight.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2
  • Brandeis looked to jump on the Engineers early in Game 2, as the first four Judges reached on hits. Sophomore CF Erin Hunt (Wake Forest, N.C./Franklin Academy) led off with a single and stole second, scoring on a single by classmate 1B Maddie Manes (San Clemente, Calif./San Juan Hills).
  • The next two Judges singled to load the bases, but MIT pitcher Becca O'Connor wriggled out the jam with a strikeout, a grounder to third that produced a force at the plate, and another grounder to third.
  • In the bottom of the frame, the Engineers took advantage of a key error to score four runs against Judge sophomore Ragini Kannan (Westford, Mass./Westford Acad.). MIT had two runners on with one out on a single and a walk when an error at third base allowed the tying run to score.
  • Kannan got the second out on a called third strike, but the Engineers' DP Katia Pendowski connected on a home run to left field, her first of the season, to give the hosts a 4-1 lead.
  • The Judges got one run back in the top of the second when sophomore RF Elle Ehrlich (Falls Church, Va./Meridian) reached on an error and Hunt followed two batters later with a triple. O'Connor stranded Hunt at third with a pop up and grounder to third, keeping the score at 4-2.
  • Kannan only allowed three hits and just one batter past first base the rest of the way, but the Judges again had trouble capitalizing on their chances as MIT played terrific defense.
  • The Engineers erased a leadoff single in the fourth by turning a nice catch in left into a double play. They cut down another run at the plate in the sixth after Fletcher led off the inning with a double. In the seventh, Burdenski hit a one-out double to center but was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple.
  • The Judges outhit the Engineers in the game, 11-5, but stranded eight runners compared to three for the hosts.
  • The top four hitters in the Brandeis lineup each had two hits, with Hunt leading the way, going 2-4 with a triple, run scored, RBI and stolen base.
  • Kannan fell to 2-2 on the season, allowing five hits over six innings. All four of her runs allowed were unearned, and she struck out eight and walked just one.
  • O'Connor improved to 1-0, scattering 11 hits over seven innings of work. She struck out three and did not walk a batter.
UP NEXT
  • In a change from the team's original schedule, Brandeis will play host to WPI on Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m., instead of traveling to Worcester on Saturday.
