WATERVILLE, Maine – The Brandeis University baseball team headed north to meet Colby College today for a doubleheader, and the Judges were on the wrong side of both games, falling 9-0 in the opener and 13-3 in game two.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis: 4-6.
- Colby: 4-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 1
- In the opener, the Judges were on the losing end of a no-hitter tossed by Colby senior Nicholas Thompson.
- Thompson allowed just three baserunners in seven innings, hitting two batters and walking one. He threw 90 innings in the complete-game victory, evening his record at 1-1.
- Colby scored single runs in the first and second inning, then added four in the fourth and three more in the fifth.
- Judge rookie starter Dimitri Skourides (Arlington, Mass. / Winchendon School) suffered the loss in his first collegiate decision. He went four innings and allowed eight hits and six runs (five earned), walking three and striking out three.
- Classmate Landen Jansen (Swampscott, Mass. / Austin Prep) threw the final two innings, giving up four hits, three runs (two earned) with two Ks and one walk.
HOW IT HAPPENED, GAME 2
- After Colby scored a run without a hit in the bottom of the first, the Brandeis offense awoke in the top of the second.
- First-year LF Henry Aronwald (Rye Brook, N.Y. / Trinity Pawling) got the Judges' first hit of the day leading off the inning. After the Mules got the first out of the inning, Brandeis loaded the bases on a pair of walks.
- Senior 2B Mike DiCenso (Cranston, R.I. / Moses Brown) drove in the tying run with a grounder to short that was booted, leaving the bases loaded.
- Colby almost got out of the frame with a strikeout and another grounder, but an error by the second baseman on a ball hit by sophomore Jordan Greenaway (Clifton, NJ / Morristown Beard School) allowed two more runs to score, giving Brandeis a 3-1 lead on just the one hit.
- The Mules scored another run without a hit in the second, taking advantage of a walk and Brandeis error to get runners on second and third before a sacrifice fly produced a run. Rookie Kyle Murray (West Roxbury, Mass. / Boston Latin) got a pop-up and a strikeout to avoid further damage in the frame.
- Unfortunately, Murray was unable to keep the hosts at bay in the third, as the Mules sent 11 batters to the plate and scored seven runs to take a 9-3 lead.
- Brandeis was unable to get their offense going again, and Colby added four more runs in the sixth for the 13-3 final.
- Murray suffered the loss, falling to 0-1 on the season, after allowing two hits and four runs with two walks and a strikeout in his inning of relief.
- Colby's Elijah Cohen was one of four Mule pitchers to combined for a five-hitter, and he earned the win with two scoreless innings despite allowing three of Brandeis's five hits.
- The Mules had 11 hits, including five doubles, plus six walks and three hit batters.
