Baseball falls to Anna Maria, 11-4

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team saw grad student Jake Freed (Vernon Hills, Ill./.Stevenson) go 2-4 with a double and two runs scored, but the Judges suffered an 11-4 defeat at the hands of Anna Maria College today on Stein Diamond.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 4-7.
  • Anna Maria: 6-7.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brandeis opened the scoring in the third inning, when grad student DH Brian King (Palos Verde, Calif./Palos Verde) dropped a single down the left-field line, plating rookie SS Dylan Walsh (Arlington, Mass. /Arlington).
  • Anna Maria took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the fifth. Brandeis grad student Marc Maestri (Katonah, N.Y./Somers) loaded the bases with a hit batter, a walk and a single, but got strikeouts for the first two outs.
  • AMC grad student SS Kosta Drosidis tagged Maestri with a single up the middle to drive in a pair of runs, and grad student 1B Jarrod Marifiote also bounced one between second and short to make it 3-1 in favor of the AMCats.
  • Brandeis got one run back in the sixth, when Freed walked and first-year LF Henry Aronwald (Rye Brook, N.Y./Trinity Pawling) singled, and they both advanced on a bobble in the outfield.
  • First-year CF Connor Crowley (Guilford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven) drove in Freed with a grounder to short, but the Judges couldn't push across the tying run.
  • The visitors blew things open with six runs on just three hits in the top of the seventh, taking advantage of an error, two walks, two hit batters, and two wild pitches by Brandeis pitchers to go ahead, 9-2. The big blow of the frame was a two-run pinch double by first-year Jonathan Guardascione.
  • Brandeis got two runs back in the bottom of the eighth on a solo home run by grad student Eddie Zanor (Branford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven) to straight-away centerfield and an RBI single by Crowley, but the Judges left the bases loaded and trailed, 9-4.
  • AMC tacked on two more runs in the ninth to close out the scoring, 11-4.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
