Freed goes deep in 9-1 loss to MIT

WALTHAM, Mass. – In the first meeting between the two local foes since 2014, Brandeis bats were kept in check by MIT starter Karl Meyer as the Engineers took a 9-1 victory on Stein Diamond today. The loss snapped the Judges' three-game winning streak.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 4-4.
  • MIT: 5-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Meyer and Brandeis senior starter Sean Decker-Jacoby (Los Angeles, Calif./Visitmar) traded zeroes through the first three innings.
  • MIT broke through with three runs in the top of the fourth, powered by a leadoff double by CF Teddy Schoenfeld. He stole third and scored on a single by 2B Kevin Sonandres to open the scoring. The Engineers then took advantage of a wide throw to second on a double play ball to score one run and keep the inning alive for another to take their 3-0 lead.
  • MIT scored single runs in the fifth on an RBI by catcher Jake Sonandres and in the sixth on a home run by Michael Finch, his fourth of the season, to dead centerfield, which made it 5-0.
  • Meanwhile, MIT's Meyer limited Brandeis to just one hit and one walk over the first six innings. Judge graduate student RF Jake Freed (Vernon Hills, Ill./Stevenson) ruined his shutout bid with a solo home run to right in the seventh, making it 5-1.
  • The visitors scored two runs in both the eighth and ninth innings, with their last two coming on Finch's second homer of the game. It was a two-run blast that just cleared the top of the fence in right-center field.
  • The Judges threatened Meyer in the eighth with a couple of singles with one out, but the MIT starter prevented any damage with a strikeout and an athletic play on a comebacker to end the inning and his day.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Brandeis's offense was paced by Freed, who went 2-4 with an RBI, a run scored, a double and a home run. He accounted for two of the Judges' five hits on the day.
  • Freed's home run was his second in as many days and the fourth of his career, which started at Oberlin College.
  • Decker-Jacoby took the loss and fell to 1-2 on the season. He threw five innings of five-hit ball, allowing four runs (three earned), walking two and striking out four.
  • Meyer improved to 2-0 after allowing just four hits over eight innings. He gave up one earned run, struck out 10 and did not walk a batter, but hit one. Owen Malone pitched the ninth inning.
  • Finch was the game's offensive star, going 2-5 with two home runs and three RBI. Jake and Kevin Sonandres also had two hits each for the visitors.
  • Brandeis now leads the all-time series with MIT 63-27-2
