3-pointers lift #10 CWRU past men, 78-70

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's basketball team had a slim lead at halftime, but the Judges couldn't hang on in the face of 13 3-pointers by the 10th-ranked Case Western Reserve University Spartans, who earned a 78-70 University Athletic Association victory today in Red Auerbach Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brandeis led by as many as seven points in the first half, taking a 34-27 lead on a 3-pointer by senior David Perez-Miralles (Miami, Fla./Riviera Prep) with just over a minute to go.
  • Case Western Reserve started their comeback in the final 60 seconds, scoring six points to get within 34-33 at the break.
  • Brandeis was paced by senior Ryan Power (Waltham, Mass./Waltham), who scored 11 points and hit three 3-pointers of his own in the first half.
  • The Judges limited the UAA's second-leading scorer Anthony Mazzeo to two first-half free throws, but he still had six assists and five rebounds. CWRU's Preston Maccoux came of the bench and matched Power with 11 points and 3 trifectas in the first half.
  • The Spartans kept up their streak after halftime, scoring the first four points on buckets by Colin Kahl and Mazzeo to take a 37-34 lead.
  • The visitors extended that run to 17-7 over the first six minutes, with a Maccoux layup giving them a 50-41 lead with 14:06 on the clock.
  • Brandeis answered with eight of the game's next 10 points, closing within 52-49 after a pair of free throws by senior Sam Adusei (Worcester, Mass./St. George's School) with 9:18 to go.
  • Maccoux hit 3-pointers on the next two CWRU possessions, keeping the Spartans ahead by two possessions, but the visitors couldn't pull away.
  • The Judges battled back and eventually tied the game after Adusei blocked a Spartan shot and sprinted the other way for an easy layup that knotted the score at 64-all with 4:13 remaining.
  • Maccoux answered from long distance to put the Spartans ahead for good.
  • Power hit a jumper to get Brandeis back within one, but the Spartans hit two from the line on their next possession, and after Judge miss, Umar Rashid connected from deep to put the Spartans ahead, 72-66, with 2:29 to go.
  • Adusei hit a lay-up on Brandeis's next possession, but Maccoux connected from beyond the arc with just over a minute to go to ice the contest.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Judges had three players score in double figures, paced by Power, who finished with 17 points. He hit 7-of-11 from the field, including 3-of-4 from deep.
  • Adusei finished with 14 points, scoring 12 in the second half. He was 4-of-6 from the field and 6-of-6 from the line.
  • Junior Gilbert Otoo (Burtonsville, Md./St. Vincent Palotti) added 13 points.
  • Senior Aedan Using (Old Lyme, Conn./Old Lyme) led the Judges with eight rebounds and five assists.
  • Case had five different players score in double digits, paced by Maccoux, who netted 25 points in 28 minutes off the bench, hitting 7-of-11 3-pointers and 9-of-15 overall.
  • Luke Thorburn and Mazzeo each had 13 points, while Rashid had 12 – on four 3-pointers – and Kahl added 10.
  • The Spartans connected on 13-of-30 from 3-point range (43.3%), while Brandeis was just 8-of-22 (36.4%). CWRU hit 7-of-16 in the second half from beyond the arc, compared to 2-of-12 for the Judges.
  • Mazzeo stuffed the stat sheet with nine rebounds and eight assists, both game-highs. Kahl matched Mazzeo with nine boards.
  • CWRU had a 39-32 rebounding advantage, including 10-4 on the offensive glass, leading to a 12-5 edge in second chance points.
  • Both teams took care of the ball, committing just five turnovers.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges head out on their annual Midwest trip next weekend, playing at Washington University on Friday night and the University of Chicago on Sunday.
