Women suffer hard-luck 1-0 defeat to #25 Rochester

WALTHAM, Mass. – A late goal proved to be the difference today as the Brandeis University women's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to 25th-ranked University of Rochester in University Athletic Association (UAA) play.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 9-6, 0-5 UAA.
  • Rochester, 4-1, 11-2-2 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges controlled the balance of play, outshooting Rochester, 21-8, including 8-1 in shots on goal.
  • Brandeis also had a 6-2 edge in corner kicks.
  • The Yellowjackets were only whistled for five fouls, compared to 17 on the Judges.
  • In the late-going, the Yellowjackets were able to use the fouls to their advantage, eventually leading to their goal.
  • After a free kick with less than four minutes to go, midway in their offensive zone, UR was able to secure a corner kick.
  • The Judges tried to clear the ball, but Rochester's Claire Grover was able to drive the ball through traffic into the back of the net with just 2:46 left on the clock to break the scoreless deadlock.
  • The goal was Grover's sixth of the season.
  • Brandeis graduate student Sydney Lenhart (Tucson, Arizona/Salpointe Catholic) got a decent shot off after the ensuing kickoff, but it wasn't enough as the Yellowjackets saw the game out from there.
  • Rochester's Grace Kuropatkin made eight saves for the clean sheet, with Lenhart's two shots on goal leading the Judges.
  • Brandeis grad student Rachel Ross (Portchester, N.Y./Somers) took the hard-luck loss, with UR's goal their only shot on the frame.
  • This was Brandeis's fourth 1-0 loss of the season – all in UAA play – and fifth one-goal defeat at the hands of a top-25 opponent this year. The Judges also suffered four 1-0 losses in UAA play in 2023.
UP NEXT
  • Brandeis travels to Cleveland to play Case Western Reserve next Sunday, Nov. 3, at 11 a.m.
