Paglia goal helps women get first UAA point with 1-1 draw at CWRU

CLEVELAND, Ohio – Brandeis University women's soccer senior Dominique Paglia (Westford, Mass./Westford Academy) scored her first goal of the season today to help the Judges claim a tie with host Case Western Reserve and earn their first University Athletic Association point of the season.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 9-6-1, 0-5-1 UAA.
  • Case Western Reserve, 8-3-5, 1-3-2 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Spartans opened the scoring in the 13th minute.
  • Midfielder Sydney Schenk took a ball at the midfield line and headed it into open space. She beat a defender to the ball and unleashed a shot from just outside the box that curled into the far netting for her fifth goal of the season.
  • Brandeis responded just under 14 minutes later in the 27th minute.
  • After CWRU had some uneven play in their defensive end, Paglia took a loose ball just outside the goalie box and blasted it home. It was her first of the season and the third goal of her career.
  • Though the Spartans would have more chances the rest of the way, as they outshot Brandeis 20-5 for the game, Brandeis graduate student Rachel Ross (Portchester, N.Y./Somers) was up to the task in goal.
  • Ross made six saves in net for the game, including one in the final minute of the game after the Judges had been issued a red card with 3:30 left on the clock and played a 10-on-11 the rest of the way.
  • Brandeis's best attempt at a go-ahead goal came in the 83rd minute when first-year Peterly Leroy (Malden, Mass./Prospect Hill Academy) drew the Spartan keeper off her line before shooting, only to see the Case defense clear it away from the open net.
  • Ross finished with six saves, while CWRU's Maggie Storti had three.
  • The Spartans had a 4-3 edge in corner kicks, and the Judges drew more fouls, 17-11.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges will take on New York University on Nov. 9 at 12 noon as they celebrate Senior Day in their regular-season finale.
