Men fall to Emory, 1-0

WALTHAM, Mass. – A goal midway through the first half was the difference today as the Brandeis University men's soccer team dropped a 1-0 decision to visiting Emory in a University Athletic Association clash on Gordon Field tonight.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 6-5-2, 2-2 UAA.
  • Emory, 6-6-1, 3-1 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • After some back-and-forth play over the first 35 minutes, the Eagles scored the game's only goal in the 37th minute on the counter-attack.
  • Emory's Josh Grand dribbled down the center of the field and found Ryan Winkler open on the left flank. Winkler dribbled towards the box and unleashed a shot from 20 yards out that curled into the far-side netting.
  • The goal was Winkler's eight of the season to lead the UAA, and the assist was Grand's eighth, also tops in the conference.
  • After the Eagles owned an 11-4 shooting advantage in the first half, the Judges controlled play in the second, but were not able to generate many quality chances.
  • Brandeis's best attempt to beat Emory's Sharan Dodwani came off the foot of Brandeis junior Rainer Osselmann-Chai (Acton, Mass./Acton-Boxborough) in the 71st minute, but Dodwani made the stop to preserve his shutout.
  • The Eagles finished with an 12-7 shooting margin and a 5-1 lead in corner kicks.
  • Brandeis senior goalie Quintin Wrabley (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) had four stops in the losing effort, while Emory's Sharan Dodwani had one save to pick up the win.
  • The loss was Brandeis's first at home to Emory since 2008. The Judges had been 5-0-1 in their previous six meetings in Waltham.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges will take on the University of Rochester on Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. in another UAA contest.
