Men's soccer remains in UAA title hunt with 3-2 win over Rochester

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's soccer team scored three-straight goals in the latter stages of the first half and survived a second-half PK to defeat visiting University of Rochester, 3-2, in University Athletic Association action. With the win, the Judges will enter the final two weeks of the season tied for second in the UAA.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 7-5-2, 3-2 UAA.
  • Rochester, 8-4-3, 2-2-1 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Yellowjackets broke the ice in this one, scoring in the 15th minute. Mikey Burke took a throw-in from the right sideline deep UR's offensive zone. It was headed into the box by Elijose Araujo and slammed home by Milos Bisenic to give Rochester a 1-0 lead.
  • The goal was Bisenic's third of the season.
  • Brandeis answered in the 24th minute. After a Rochester turnover near midfield, Judge sophomore Maddox Yu (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) noticed the UR goalkeeper off his line and lofted a high arcing shot from 50 yards out that bounced into the open net. The goal was his second of the campaign.
  • The Judges went ahead just 6:01 later on a similar shot. Junior Nico Beninda (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) played a ball over the top for classmate Elan Romo (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay), who took a dribble and fired a 20-yard shot from just outside the left corner of the box over the keeper to give Brandeis a 2-1 lead. It was Romo's second goal of the season.
  • In the 38th minute Brandeis got a vital insurance goal, when sophomore Kenshin Murakawa (Osaka, Japan/Lexington, Mass.) connected a corner kick with the head of senior back Andres Gonzalez (Caracas, Venezuela/Divine Savior Academy), who buried inside the near goalpost. The goal was Gonzalez's first of the season and the fifth of his career. It also proved to be his second career game-winner.
  • After Brandeis outshot UR, 11-7, in the first half, the teams played back-and-forth in the second, with shots even at 5-all.
  • Rochester came within a goal in the 63rd minute when they were awarded a PK and Alessio Cristanetti-Walker buried it into the right-center of the net to make the score 3-2.
  • The Yellowjackets' Pasquale Carusone hit a post off a long throw-in in the 75th minute, but the Judges were able to keep the visitors at bay the rest of the way.
  • Brandeis finished with a 16-12 advantage in shots, 7-4, in shots on goal.
  • Brandeis senior Quintin Wrabley (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) earned the win with two saves, while Rochester's Santino Lupica-Tondo made four stops in the losing effort.
  • The visitors had an 8-5 edge in corner kicks and they were only whistled for six fouls compared to 18 for Brandeis.
  • The Judges' three goals were the most allowed by Rochester this season, and they only allowed two on two occasions.
  • Brandeis had not defeated Rochester since 2016, going 0-5-1 in the previous six meetings.
  • With the win, Brandeis sits in a tie with Chicago in the UAA with nine points, three back of Emory, who defeated NYU today, 1-0.
