Yu tallies for men, but Chicago strikes late for 3-2 win

CHICAGO, Ill. – A goal in the 77th minute was the difference maker as the Brandeis University men's soccer team suffered its first University Athletic Association loss of the season, 3-2, at the University of Chicago today.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis, 6-4-2, 2-1-0 UAA.
  • Chicago, 7-6-1, 2-0-1 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In a back-and-forth game, the Judges struck first in the sixth minute. Sophomore Maddox Yu (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield) netted his first of the season by finishing a nice cross from first-year Dylan Marzouca (Kingston, Jamaica/Suffield Academy). It was the second goal of Yu's career.
  • Chicago answered in the 12th minute on a goal from Julius Rauch and an assist by Danny Mendoza.
  • The Maroons went on top in the 41st minute, connecting some nice passes inside the 18-yard box to allow Edward Wu to find the back of the net. Sam Jiminez and Ryan Shea supplied the assists.
  • Brandeis found an equalizer in the 59th minute when senior Eli Mones (Portland, Ore./Grant) beat a defender to the ball along the sideline and caught the Chicago goalkeeper well off his line. Mones fired the ball at the net and scored from 40 yards out. It was his third-straight UAA game with a goal.
  • The home team went back on top in the 77th minute, when Wu's shot along the ground found its way through traffic and into the far-right netting. Max Weene earned the assist.
  • Just under two minutes late Brandeis junior Josh Andrews (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) nearly equalized again, but his shot was cleared off the line at the last second and the Maroons hung on the rest of the way.
  • Chicago owned a 15-4 shot advantage, including 7-2 in shots on goal.
  • Judge senior Quintin Wrabley (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) made four saves in the losing effort, while UC's Dhirpal Shah got the win despite not making any saves.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges play three of their last four games at home against UAA opponents, starting next Friday, October 25th, at 7:30 p.m. against Emory.
