WALTHAM, Mass. – For the second weekend in a row, Brandeis University men's soccer senior walk-on
Eli Mones (Portland, Ore./Grant) scored a game-winning goal in University Athletic Association play, this time scoring in the 88th minute to give the Judges a 1-0 win over Washington University in St. Louis.
TEAM RECORDS
- Brandeis, 6-3-2, 2-0-0 UAA.
- Washington University, 6-4-1, 0-2-0 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- The Bears had the edge in the first half, outshooting Brandeis, 8-4, including 3-0 in shots on goal, but neither team was able to generate any quality chances.
- The visitors' best chance in the second half came in the 65th minute when Zach Susee's shot to the upper left was punched over the goal by Brandeis senior goalie Quintin Wrabley (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley).
- Brandeis nearly broke the ice just three minutes later, when senior Christian Godinho (Leominster, Mass./Leominster) just missed a header off a corner.
- Susee had a couple more shots that were just off target in the 77th and 80th minutes before the Judges finally scored.
- In the 88th minute, junior Josh Andrews (Lexington, Mass./Lexington) took a loose ball and dribbled to the right sideline to create some space. He sent the ball to classmate Nico Beninda (Monroe Township, N.J./Monroe Township) on the edge of the box, and Beninda fired it at the near post, where Mones was waiting in front to redirect it over the WashU netminder.
- The goal was Mones's second of the season and third of his career, all of which have been UAA game-winners.
- He notched the second goal in Brandeis's 2-1 win at Carnegie Mellon last weekend.
- After the goal, the Bears' Ethan Wirtschafter had a decent look at goal in the final minute of play, but shot just over as time wound down.
- Washington U. had the overall shooting advantage, 21-8, including 8-1 in shots on goal.
- Wrabley finished with eight saves, his second-highest total of the season, to earn his third shutout of the campaign and seventh of his career.
- WashU's Cal L'Hommedieu did not make a save, allowing the one goal and taking the loss.
- Today's win is Brandeis's third in a row over Washington University, the longest streak in program history.
