Women drop non-conference finale to Clark, 84-72

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team held a 58-54 lead after three quarters, but the visiting Clark University Cougars opened the fourth period on a 13-2 run and emerged with an 84-72 non-conference victory over the Judges tonight in Red Auerbach Arena.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The two squads played neck-and-neck through the first three periods, which featured 11 ties and seven lead changes.
  • Brandeis led, 20-19, after one quarter and the game was tied at 34-all at halftime.
  • In the first half, Brandeis was paced by terrific outside shooting, hitting 7-of-12 from beyond the arc, as well as from the line, where they were 11-of-16, while Clark was just 1-of-3.
  • The Cougars were kept in the contest by first-year Kailey Rios, who scored 20 of her team's 34 points in the opening 20 minutes.
  • Brandeis found their touch inside in the third quarter, shooting 64.3% overall (9-of-14) as they took a 58-54 lead into the fourth.
  • The Judges went cold in the start to the final 10 minutes, missing eight of their first nine attempts.
  • Meanwhile, Clark hit five of their first eight to turn a four-point deficit into a seven-point lead at the midpoint of the stanza after Rios and Catherine Antwi hit back-to-back 3-pointers to make it 67-60.
  • Brandeis got back to within three after a Lulu Ohm (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) jumper and again on a bucket by junior Brooke Reed (Chantilly, Va./Westfield) that made it 70-67 with 2:02 remaining.
  • Antwi added her second trifecta of the game on the next Clark possession to make it a six-point contest, and the visitors hit 11 of their last 12 free throws to put the game away.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Brandeis was paced by Ohm, who scored eight of her team-high 13 points in the second half. She hit 6-of-14 overall with a 3-pointer. Ohm also had a game-high four assists and led the Judges with two steals.
  • Junior Mollie Obar (North Yarmouth, Maine/Greeley) added 13 points off the bench, 11 coming in the first half. She hit 3-of-3 from beyond the arc, the only Brandeis player with multiple 3-pointers.
  • Sophomore Molly James (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) added 11 points, hitting 6-of-8 from the line.
  • Sophomore Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) just missed a double-double with nine points and a game-high nine rebounds, a figure matched by Reed. Reed had five of her boards on the offensive glass.
  • Brandeis outrebounded Clark, 42-37, including 16-11 on the offensive glass.
  • The Cougars had four players score in double digits, including three starters.
  • Rios led the way for the visitors, scoring 28 points on 10-of-16 overall, 5-of-9 from 3-point range, and 3-of-3 from the line.
  • Jaqueline Faulise scored nine of her 16 points in the fourth quarter. Olivia Shipley and Alexis Ross each finished with 10 points.
  • Faulise led Clark with six rebounds and tied with Antwi for team-high with three assists. Ross led all players with four steals.
  • Clark won the turnover battle, 15-11, and converted the miscues into a 22-12 scoring advantage.
  • After Brandeis shot 50 percent or better from 3-point range in each of the first three periods, the Cougars held Brandeis to 2-for-11 (18.2%) in the fourth. They also did not allow the Judges to get to the free-throw line in the last 10 minutes, while hitting 13-of-15 of their own.
