Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Adam Levin '94

Raju's first career goal helps women to 2-1 win at RWU

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Brandeis University women's soccer team scored a goal in each half and hung on after surrendering a late goal to take a 2-1 road non-conference victory at Roger Williams University today.
TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 3-0-1.
  • Roger Williams: 1-2-1.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges controlled play in the first half, outshooting RWU, 7-2.
  • They got on the board just over five minutes into the game on a connection between a pair of first-year players. After senior Yasla Ngoma (North Plainfield, N.J./Oak Knoll) fed the ball into the box, first-year Lacey Mbugua (Brockton, Mass./Worcester Academy) shot it toward the far right post. Classmate Tanvi Raju (Hyderabad, India/Indus International School) got a foot on the ball to redirect it, making sure it found the back of the net.
  • The Judges scored a key insurance goal in the 66th minute when Ngoma scored her team-leading third of the season unassisted. After poor RWU clearance at the top of the 18-yard box, Ngoma took one dribble to her left and blasted a left-footed shot inside the near post.
  • The Hawks spoiled Brandeis's shutout bid in the 85th minute. RWU's Bianca Robbins dribbled to the touch-line then passed back across the box to Raffaella Brunetti, who blasted it into the open net for her third of the season.
  • Brandeis reinserted their starters for the final five minutes to see the game out and provide the Judges their third win in a row and extend their unbeaten streak to four.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Brandeis outshot Roger Williams, 11-5 for the game, including 5-1 in shots on goal.
  • Coco Marrelli made three saves for RWU in the losing effort, while junior Hannah Bassan (Aventura, Fla./NSU University School) did not have a save for the Judges.
  • Ngoma's goal was the 12th of her career and her third game-winner.
  • She has provided two of the team's three game-winning goals this season.
UP NEXT
  • Brandeis is right back in action tomorrow afternoon at 5 p.m. at home against Rhode Island College.
