Game Recap: Women's Soccer | | Adam Levin '94

#18 women drop battle of unbeatens with top-ranked CMU, 1-0

WALTHAM, Mass. – In a contest between two unbeaten University Athletic Association women's soccer squads, the top-ranked Carnegie Mellon University Tartans emerged victorious with a 1-0 win on the road over #18-ranked Brandeis University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The first half favored CMU, as the Tartans outshot the Judges, 6-0.
  • Brandeis junior Hannah Bassan (Aventura, Fla./NSU University School) made stops on the Tartans' first three shots on goal, but the visitors broke through in the 40th minute.
  • CMU worked the ball around the box, and the Tartans' Rachel Martini crossed a ball through the box with Bassan on the near post. She was unable to intercept the cross, and Emma Shirzad was there to put the ball in the back of the net for her second goal of the season.
  • Brandeis was much more aggressive in the second half when they had a slim 7-6 shooting advantage.
  • Bassan denied Martini near the bottom-right post in the 59th minute, and Tartan netminder Abby O'Connor made her first save of the game just over two minutes later in the 62nd against Brandeis first-year Tanvi Raju (Hyderabad, India/Indus International School).
  • Brandeis's best attempt in the 65th minute, when senior Yasla Ngoma (North Plainfield, N.J./Oak Knoll) had a look at an open net on a cross first-year reserve Lacey Mbugua (Brockton, Mass./Worcester Academy) from but sent the ball just over the crossbar.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • For the game, CMU outshot Brandeis, 13-7, including 7-1 in shots on goal.
  • Brandeis had the game's only two corner kicks, while CMU had one more foul than the Judges, 9-8.
  • Bassan made six saves for the Judges, while O'Connor had one for the visitors.
  • CMU has won four in a row in the series and improved to 14-12-5 overall against Brandeis.
