#22 women drop second straight 1-0 game to unbeaten foe against USM

WALTHAM, Mass. – For the second-straight match, the #22 Brandeis University women's soccer team faced an undefeated foe, and the Judges came out on the wrong end of a 1-0 score-line for the second game in a row, as visiting Southern Maine escaped with a non-conference win on Gordon Field.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 5-2-3, ranked #22 in Division III by United Soccer Coaches
  • Southern Maine: 10-0-2, unranked.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The only goal of the game came in the fifth minute off the foot of USM's Eliza Roy. The play started when the Huskies' Riley Reitchel crossed a ball from the right side of the net. Brandeis junior Hannah Bassan (Aventura, Fla./NSU University School) came off her line to try to intercept the cross, but was unable to corral it, allowing Roy to battle past a defender and knock it home for her fifth of the season.
  • Reitchel had a couple of more attempts to extend the visitors' lead in the sixth and 10th minutes, but was unable to put a long shot on target when she caught Bassan off her line.
  • Brandeis also got help when the defense cleared a ball off the line after a USM free kick in the 3th minute thanks to senior Charlotte TeKrony (Aldie, Va./John Champe).
  • The Judges did see some extended offense in the latter stages of the first half, as then went on to outshoot the Huskies, 8-6, in the period, but USM goalie Breanna Atwood made her three saves easily.
  • Brandeis was on the front foot in the second half as well, outshooting USM 11-4, forcing Atwood to make four more saves to preserve the lead.
  • The Judges' best chances came late, when first-year Abby Kenkelen's (Philadelphia, Pa./Springside Chestnut Hill) cross was headed just high by senior Sydney Lenhart (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic) in the 88th minute, while a Kenkelen blast 22 seconds later also went just high.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Brandeis finished with a 19-10 advantage in shots, 7-4 in shots on goal.
  • Atwood made seven saves for her sixth solo shutout of the season and the team's eighth.
  • Bassan made two stops in the first 45 minutes, but suffered the loss. First-year Amaya Logan (Jacksonville, Fla./Creekside) did not have to make a save in the second half.
  • Senior Yasla Ngoma (North Plainfield, N.J./Oak Knoll) led the Judges with four shots, one on goal.
UP NEXT
  • Brandeis will take on their third-straight undefeated opponent on Saturday when they head to #3-ranked Washington University for a 12 p.m. (11 a.m. Central) start.
