Maor goal helps men battle to 1-1 draw in UAA opener with CMU

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis and Carnegie Mellon men's soccer teams each scored first-half goals today as the Judges and Tartans battled to a 1-1 draw in the University Athletic Association opener for both teams.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 2-4-3, 0-0-1 UAA.
  • Carnegie Mellon: 7-1-2, 0-0-1 UAA.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • In a chippy game that saw 10 yellow cards assessed – five for each team – the Judges appeared to have an early advantage in the 10th minute when senior Sancho Maroto Tobias (Acton, Mass./Lexington) was pulled down going for goal, possibly by a last-man defender. The referees assessed a yellow card instead of a red, however, and Maroto Tobias's shot on the Judges' ensuing free kick was stopped by CMU's Liam Ryan.
  • Five minutes later, the Tartans broke the ice. Josh Baugh took a long free kick from 40 yards out, putting it in the box and on the head of back Diederik Schlingermann. Schlingermann deposited it in the back of the net for his third goal of the season.
  • The teams went back and forth for the rest of the period before the Judges found an equalizer. In the 42nd minute, they worked the ball around the 18-yard box before first-year Aidan Chuang (New York, N.Y./Milton Acad.) on the right side of the box found senior Roee Maor (Demarest, N.J./Northern Valley Regional) on the left. Maor blasted a right-footed shot off the left post and past Ryan. It was Maor's second of the campaign.
  • Brandeis played on the front foot in the second half, outshooting CMU 11-2 for the stanza.
  • Ryan made five saves after the break, with his best coming late in the game. Sophomore Elan Romo (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay), who had earlier gone just wide from a tough angle from left to right, ticketed a ball for the far left post that Ryan made a diving stop on. The Tartan keeper then corralled a header by Gabriel Haithcock (Macon, Ga./IMG Academy) on the ensuing corner kick to see out the game.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Brandeis ended up with a 20-7 shooting advantage, including 7-4 in shots on goal.
  • Ryan finished with six saves, while Brandeis junior Quintin Wrabley (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) had three.
  • Brandeis also enjoyed a 7-2 margin in corner kicks, while fouls were 16-15 towards the Judges.
  • The teams are 1-1-2 in the last four meetings.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges travel to MIT on Wednesday, October 4, for a non-conference match at 7 p.m.
