Verstovsek establishes new record for kills in a 3-set match in win over RWU

BRISTOL, R.I. – Brandeis University volleyball junior Lara Verstovsek (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) set a new school record with 22 kills in a three-set match tonight as the Judges defeated host Roger Williams University, 3-0. Set scores were 29-27, 25-23, 25-21.

INSIDE THE RECORD
  • Verstovsek was nearly perfect through the first two sets.
  • She had eight kills in 12 attempts in the opener as the Judges outlasted the Hawks in a first set that featured 14 ties and five lead changes before Brandeis took a 29-27 win.
  • In the second set, Verstovsek was even better, posting eight more kills in just 10 attacks, giving her 16 kills and no errors in 22 attempts (.727 hitting percentage) as the Judges went ahead, 2-0, with a 25-23 win.
  • Verstovsek made her first error of the match early in the third set, but she finished up with six kills and two errors in 15 attempts to finish with 22 kills, a Brandeis school record for a three-set match. It was Brandeis's best set, winning 25-21, with eight ties but just one lead change.
  • Verstovsek eclipsed a record set by Liz Hood '14 in 2012, when she had 21 kills against Emmanuel.
  • This was the fourth 20-kill match of Verstovsek's career, finishing two shy of her career-best 24 kills in a match last season against Endicott.  
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • In addition to Verstovsek's fantastic night, sophomore Anna Ertischek (Montgomery, Texas/Lake Creek) finished with 14 kills and had just three errors in 26 attacks to finish with a .423 hitting percentage.
  • Sophomore Julia Liang (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements) had the bulk of the time at setter, distributing 33 assists, a career-high, as she guided the Judges to a season-high .315 team hitting percentage.
  • Liang also had a team-high eight digs, while seniors Ines Grom-Mansencal (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wyoming) and Ella Pereira (Redondo Beach, Calif./Rolling Hills Prep) each had seven.
  • First-year Olivia Nirode (Keller, Texas/Keller) delivered three of the team's six service aces.
