Ertischek's 18 kills not enough in 3-1 loss to Colby

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore outside hitter Anna Ertischek (Montgomery, Texas/Lake Creek) had 18 kills, but the Brandeis University volleyball team couldn't overcome visiting Colby College as the Mules took a 3-1 decision in Red Auerbach Arena this afternoon.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 6-7.
  • Colby: 7-5.
HOW IT HAPPENED (Set scores: 27-25, 23-25, 25-18, 25-21)
  • As they did in their first set in their previous match at Roger Williams, Brandeis went into extra points to decide the first set. Unfortunately, it went Colby's way, as the Mules escaped the first set point of the match and closed on a 4-1 run to take it, 27-25.
  • The Judges bounced back with another two-point set, winning 25-23. With the set tied at 22-all, Ertischek delivered two straight kills, followed by an Ines Grom-Mansencal (Cincinnati, Ohio/Wyoming) service ace to close things out.
  • The Mules led wire-to-wire in the third set, getting off to a 6-2 start. Brandeis closed within one point on several occasions, with a Lara Verstovsek (Houston, Texas/Episcopal) service ace making it 15-14 for the last time. Colby answered with a 7-0 run and took it 25-18.
  • Another fast start for the visitors in the fourth set looked to make the difference, as they outscored Brandeis 8-2 over the first 10 points.
  • The Judges answered and eventually tied the score at 18-all, thanks to a pair of kills by Verstovsek and one from Grom-Mansencal. Colby answered with six of the next seven points to get within 24-19, and while the Judges avoided the first two match points on Verstovsek kills, Colby's top player, Brady Moseley closed things out.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Ertischek led the Judges with 18 kills, two shy of her career-best set earlier this season. She also had only four errors in 40 attempts for a .350 hitting percentage.
  • Verstovsek finished with 17 kills and eight errors in 50 attacks for a .180 hitting percentage. She also had 12 digs for her fifth double-double of the season and first since Sept. 14, while also pacing the team at the net with three blocks, tied with junior Arianna Jackson (Lewis Center, Ohio/Oletangy Orange)
  • Senior libero Ella Pereira (Redondo Beach, Calif./Rolling Hills Prep) led Brandeis with 17 digs.
  • Grom-Mansencal had 23 assists, while sophomore Julia Liang (Sugar Land, Texas/Clements) had 12.
