Romo goal gets men past Clark, 1-0

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's soccer team picked up its third clean sheet of the season and earned their first home win thanks to a 28th minute goal by sophomore Elan Romo (Weston, Fla./Cypress Bay) in a 1-0 victory over visiting Clark University tonight on Gordon Field.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 2-4-2.
  • Clark: 2-4-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges dominated the first half of action, outshooting Clark, 14-4, including 4-2 in shots on goal.
  • The difference came in the 28th minute, when senior Sancho Maroto Tobias (Acton, Mass./Lexington) laid a ball off for Romo at the top of the box, just outside the penalty arc. Romo switched feet and sent a laser left-footer inside the near left post.
  • The goal was Romo's first of the season and the second of his career. It was also his first career game-winner.
  • While the Cougars came out more assertive in the second half, the Judges still had the shooting advantage, 11-4,
  • Both goalkeepers made some outstanding saves in the second stanza to keep their teams in it. Brandeis junior Quintin Wrabley (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) made a terrific leaping stop on Clark's Luke Sheldon in the 50th minute to keep things even, then a diving save on Amechi Aduba in the 69th minute.
  • Clark's Diego Marin parried a Henning Dierks (Boston, Mass./Dexter Southfield School) attempt in the 56th minute to keep things close, then stoned first-year Aidan Chuang (New York, N.Y./Milton Acad.) in the 83rd minute.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • The Judges finished with a 25-11 edge in shots, 9-4 in shots on goal, and 6-2 in corner kicks.
  • Wrabley finished with four saves for his third shutout of the season and of his career.
  • Marin made seven saves for the Cougars, with the defense also clearing one off the line.
  • With the win, the Judges improve to 35-13-7 all-time against Clark, including 10-0-1 in their last 11 meetings.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges open University Athletic Association play on Saturday afternoon against Carnegie Mellon at 1:30 p.m. The match is part of a doubleheader that will feature the #18 Brandeis women taking on the #1-ranked Tartans at 11 a.m.
