Wheaton escapes with 1-0 win against men

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's soccer team saw visiting Wheaton College break a scoreless deadlock in the 83rd minute tonight as the Lyons escaped with a 1-0 non-conference victory on Gordon Field.

  • Wheaton: 2-1-3.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Wheaton controlled play in the first half, outshooting Brandeis, 10-1, but the Lyons were unable to find the back of the net.
  • Brandeis sophomore Tyler Correnti (West Newbury, Mass./Pentucket Regional) made four saves in the first stanza, but Wheaton's best opportunities came in the 42nd minute, when Alberto Franceschi and Gavin Mahoney each hit the crossbar on consecutive shots.
  • Wheaton continued their momentum into the second half, with Correnti making his best save of the game in the 59th minute, parrying a Luke Strange shot ticketed for the upper 90 over the crossbar.
  • Brandeis had a few good looks in the middle part of the second half, but nothing too dangerous.
  • The Lyons finally broke through in the 83rd minute when Strange assisted Franceschi on a give-and-go, setting up Francheschi's first goal of the season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Wheaton ended up with a 22-8 advantage in shots, including 8-0 in shots on goal.
  • Correnti made six saves in his collegiate debut. Wheaton's Michael O'Gara did not have to make a save in keeping a clean sheet.
  • The Lyons also had an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Wheaton takes a 17-16-3 edge in the all-time series between the two sides.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges are right back in action tomorrow evening when they resume a match against Vassar College at 8 p.m. The contest, which was started on Sept. 9, was halted in the 55th minute due to lightning.
