Women rally past Bridgewater State, 2-1, to remain unbeaten

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University women's soccer senior Sydney Lenhart (Tucson, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic) netted the game-winning goal in the 79th minute tonight as the Judges came from behind to defeat visiting Bridgewater State University on Gordon Field and stay undefeated on the season.
TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 4-0-3.
  • Bridgewater State: 2-3-0.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brandeis controlled the run of play in the first half, outshooting BSU, 16-4, including 3-2 in shots on goal.
  • The Bears struck first, however, in the 12th minute, on their first shot of the game. After her team earned a free kick about 35 yards from goal, BSU's Abigail Shea tapped the ball to Sydney Dewhurst. Dewhurst blasted the ball into the upper-right corner of the net with power for her second goal of the season.
  • BSU goalkeeper Logan Levesque kept her team in the game with a save on sophomore Madison Sansone (Westport, Conn./Staples) in the 42nd minute, while the Bears cleared another Sansone attempt off the line following a corner kick in the 43rd.
  • After continuing their pressure in the second half, including a pair of fine early saves by Levesque, Brandeis finally broke through in the 65th minute. Junior back Rachel Watler (Stevenson Ranch, Calif./West Ranch) won a ball in the midfield and eluded the Bear defense, allowing her to loft the ball over the top to rookie forward Tanvi Raju (Hyderabad, India/Indus International School). Ranju took a touch and fired it inside the near post for her third goal of the season, all coming in the last four games.
  • The Judges got the game-winner in the 79th minute, capitalizing on their 13th corner kick of the game. After rookie midfielder Ali Pennella (Stamford, Conn./Greenwich) saw her initial shot hit off the crossbar and possibly tickle the twine, Lenhart blasted home BSU's failed clearing attempt for her second goal of the season.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Brandeis rookie Amaya Logan (Jacksonville, Fla./Creekside) played the second half of the game in goal and was untested, earning her second win of the season. Junior Hannah Bassan (Aventura, Fla./NSU University School) made two saves in the first half, but allowed BSU's only goal.
  • Levesque earned four saves in the losing effort for BSU.
  • Brandeis outshot the Bears, 28-6, including 7-3 in shots on goal. The Judges also had a 13-2 advantage in corner kicks.
  • The game-winning goal was Lenhart's sixth of her career, accounting for more than half of her 11 career goals.
  • The win extends Brandeis unbeaten streak to seven in a row, their longest since winning eight in a row to start the 2018 season. It was also the Judges' 10th-straight win over Bridgewater State.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges are off for a week before taking on Lesley University on the road next Tuesday at 8 p.m. Bridgewater State hosts Fitchburg State on Friday at 7 p.m. in their first home MASCAC game of the season.
