Fencers add eight more wins at Brandeis Invitational

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University fencing teams picked up four wins each today at their annual Brandeis Invitational. The Judges men and women each defeated Division III opponents Drew University, Lawrence University, Yeshiva University and knocked of Division I LIU Brooklyn. The men suffered three narrow losses to Division I foes, St. John's, Yale and Cornell, all by 16-11 scores, while the women almost knocked off SJU, 14-13, and fell to Cornell.

TOP PERFORMERS, SQUADS
  • The women's sabre squad led the way with a 5-1 record on the day, with two 9-0 wins and another 8-1 victory over Drew. Their defeat was a 5-4 loss to Cornell.
  • Men's foil also picked up five wins, going 5-2. With 9-0 wins over LIU and Yeshiva, 7-2 victories over Lawrence and St. John's and 6-3 against Drew, the squad was two wins short of going undefeated with 5-4 losses to Yale and Cornell.
  • Women's foil and epee each went 3-3, with the foil squad also earning two 9-0 wins and another 8-1. The foilists were two wins from going 5-1, suffering 5-4 losses against St. John's and LIU.
  • Men's sabre and men's epee were both 3-4 on the day, with the sabre squad resting All-Americans Lev BenAvram (Bethesda, Md./Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School) and Tony Escueta (Grand Prairie, Texas/Abeka Home School Academy).
TOP PERFORMERS, INDIVIDUAL
  •  The most wins on the day were picked up by junior Mark Shamis (San Jose, Calif./Leigh), who went 14-6 for the men's epee squad. He was undefeated against Yeshiva and Lawrence, 2-1 against Drew, Yale, Cornell and LIU.
  • First-year Dashiell Lin (San Francisco, Calif./Stuart Hall) paced the foil squad to its success by going undefeated with 3-0 records against Lawrence, Yale, Cornell and LIU to finish 12-0. Classmate Jake Anderson (San Francisco, Calif.S/an Francisco Waldorf) went 8-1 with a 3-0 record against Yeshiva and LIU and 2-1 against Drew.
  • Sophomore Kat Xikes (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) led the women's team with 14 overall wins and a 13-4 overall record. Xikes won her first 11 matches against Drew, Lawrence, St. John's and Yeshiva and finished up 2-1 against LIU, with an 0-3 record against Cornell.
  • Grad student All-American Maggie Shealy (Chapel Hill, N.C./East Chapel Hill) went 11-1, with 3-0 records against Yeshiva, Cornell and LIU, 1-0 against Lawrence and 1-1 against St. John's.
  • Junior Bronwyn Rothman-Hall (San Francisco, Calif./Ruth Asawa School of the Arts) was tied Xikes on the team with 13 wins for the epee squad. She went 3-0 against Lawrence, Yeshiva and LIU and 2-1 against Cornell.
  • Sophomore Hannah Du (Winchester, Mass./Winchester) earned 10 wins on the day, going 10-3 with perfect records against Drew, Lawrence and Cornell.
  • Junior Calla Lee (Duluth, Ga./Lambert) had an impressive day, picking up eight wins across two different weapons. She started out 5-0 in sabre, then earned three more wins for the epee squad.

  • The Judges are done for the semester and return to action next January with another home meet, the annual Eric Sollee Invitational.
