Vaughan's career night leads Judges past Rivier, 72-63

NASHUA, N.H. – The Brandeis University women's basketball team got a career-high 21 points from sophomore Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) tonight as the Judges snapped a five-game skid with a 72-63 victory on the road at Rivier University.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges opened the game with a one-point advantage thanks to a pre-game technical foul by Rivier.
  • Raider senior Lyric Grumblatt took over from there, equaling the Judges' output with 14 points as the hosts took a 22-14 lead.
  • Brandeis responded in the second, holding Rivier to just eight points while scoring 22 of their own to take a 36-30 lead into the locker room.
  • The Judges tied the game on a Vaughan lay-up with 4:49 to go in the first half and took the lead for good on a 3-pointer by junior Lulu Ohm (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) at the 3:37 mark.
  • Vaughan turned the tables on Rivier, matching their scoring output with eight points in the period.
  • The Judges extended their lead in the third quarter, shooting 56.3% from the field (9-16) to outscore the Raiders, 20-14, as Vaughan added seven more points to her total.
  • Grumblatt had another big period in the fourth for Rivier with 11 points, but it wasn't enough to overcome six points each from Vaughan and sophomore Molly James (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair), who hit two 3-pointers.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Vaughan scored a career-high 21 points on 9-of-13 from the field and 3-of-5 from the line.
  • Vaughan also came up just short of her second career double-double with nine rebounds and set a new career-high with three steals.
  • Three other Judges reached double digits in scoring. James netted a career-high 12 points off the bench, with eight coming in the second half.
  • Ohm added 11 points and graduate student Francesca Marchese (Staten Island, N.Y./Staten Island Academy) had 10, including a pair of 3-pointers to move into third on Brandeis's career list with 142.
  • Sophomore Brooke Reed (Chantilly, Va./Westfield) pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds, just missing a fifth Judge in double-digits and a first career double-double with nine points, eight in the first half.
  • Ohm and senior Selenya Gonzalez (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Central) led both teams with four assists.
  • Grumblatt led all players with 29 points, most coming in the first and fourth quarters. She shot    9-of-26 overall, 3-of-13 from downtown and 8-of-9 from the line. She also led the Raiders with 11 rebounds, three assists and three steals.
  • The Judges shot a season-high 38 percent from the field (27-71), including 50% inside the arc (22-44) while holding their opponents to their second-lowest percentage of the campaign at 28.6% (20-70).
  • Brandeis outscored Rivier, 36-18, in points in the paint.
