Gonzalez nets career-high 16 in 64-58 loss to RWU

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University women's basketball senior Selenya Gonzalez (Springfield, Mass./Springfield Central) scored a career-high 16 points, but a cold third quarter cost the Judges in a 64-58 non-conference loss to Roger Williams tonight in Red Auerbach Arena.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 1-5.
  • Roger Williams: 2-2.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges led for a majority of a first half that featured five ties and eight lead changes. They outscored Roger Williams, 15-13, in the first quarter and the teams were even in the second, 16-16, as the Judges took a 31-29 lead into the locker room.
  • Both squads shot around 31 percent from the field, but Brandeis's 5-1 advantage in 3-pointers was nearly offset by RWU's 8-2 margin from the free-throw line.
  • Gonzalez tied her previous career scoring high with nine first-half points, while the Hawks' Abrielle Racine and Sophia Coppola had eight points each to account for 16 of their 29.
  • The third period proved pivotal, as Roger Williams outscored Brandeis, 14-7. Brandeis's defense limited the visitors to just 35.7% from the field (5-14), but the Judges were even colder, hitting just 2-of-15 overall (13.3%), including 0-of-6 from 3-point range.
  • Coppola and Katie Galligan had six points each for RWU, both one less than the entire Brandeis squad.
  • RWU doubled their lead with a 10-5 run to open the fourth quarter, with Galligan and Coppola each accounting for four points as the visitors extended their lead to 53-43 with 5:41 remaining.
  • After Coppola missed the back end of a pair of foul shots with 4:56 to go, leaving the Hawks' advantage at 54-46, Gonzalez scored the game's next five points with a 3-pointers and two free throws, cutting the RWU lead to three at 54-51 with 3:26 remaining.
  • Brandeis got a stop and had a chance to get closer, but the Hawks forced a turnover and scored the next four points to go back up by three possessions. The Judges would get back to within three points with 34 seconds to go, but Galligan and Coppola hit five of their last six free throws to clinch the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Gonzalez led the Judges with her career night, scoring 16 points on 5-of-13 overall 2-of-5 from downtown and 4-of-6 from the line.
  • Two other Brandeis players just missed double-doubles, as sophomore Molly James (Pittsburgh, Pa./Upper St. Clair) had nine points and a team- and career-high 10 rebounds off the bench, while classmate Katherine Vaughan (Bedford, Mass./Bedford) had nine points, eight boards and three blocked shots.
  • Junior Lulu Ohm (Waltham, Mass./Waltham) had five rebounds, three assists and two steals.
