WALTHAM, Mass. – Over the weekend both Brandeis men's and women's swimming and diving teams dropped a pair of meets against nationally-ranked opponents on the road. On Saturday at Coast Guard, the Bears earned a 129-75 win over the Judges women and 150-53 against the men. On Sunday, it was Tufts who earned a sweep, 138-104 for the men and 149-116 over the women.
TEAM RECORDS AND RANKINGS
Brandeis: Women, 1-7; Men, 1-6.
Coast Guard: Women, 3-1, #25 in Division III by CSCAA; Men, 4-0, #24 in Division III.
Tufts: Women, 1-0, #9 in Division III; Men, 1-0, #17 in Division III.
TOP PERFORMERS – WOMEN
- Brandeis won five events against Coast Guard and one against Tufts, all on the women's side.
- First-year diver Josie Kearns (Half Moon Bay, Calif./Half Moon Bay) won both events against Coast Guard, with 183.45 points on the 1-meter board and 165.82 on the 3-meter board.
- Junior Chloe Gonzalez (Miami Beach, Fla./Miami Beach) won the 200 freestyle in 1:59.50 by two seconds over the runner-up from the Bears. Gonzalez also had the team's only win against Tufts in the same event. She swam 1:58.18 and won by a margin of 0.7 seconds over the Jumbos.
- Senior Monica Iizuka (Chatham, N.J./Chatham) took the 50 free in 25.15 seconds, out-touching her nearest rival by 0.05 seconds and won the 100 backstroke in 1:00.91 by nearly a second.
TOP PERFORMERS – MEN
- Though the men didn't have any wins, sophomore Benjamin Lee (Upton, Mass./Nipmuc Regional) had several second-place finishes. He was runner-up in the 200 free against Coast Guard in 1:46.28, four seconds off the pace. He was also second in the 100 with a time of 49.49, exactly one second out of first. Lee also finished second in the 200 free against Tufts with a time of 1:45.74 and nearly won the 200 IM, with a time of 1:59.76, just five-hundredths of a second out of winning.
- Junior Gerald Deng (Rego Park, N.Y./Bronx High School of Science) was second in the 100 butterfly against the Bears with a time of 55.61 seconds
- First-year Riley Pasicaran (Kennewick, Wash./Hanford) was second in the 100 backstroke against CGA with a time of 55.72 seconds, 0.58 seconds out of the top spot.
