Sansone gets women back to winning ways, 1-0, over Wheaton

NORTON, Mass. — Sophomore midfielder Madison Sansone (Westport, Conn./Staples) tallied her first collegiate goal to give the Brandeis University women's soccer team a 1-0 victory over host Wheaton College (Mass.) this afternoon at Mirrione Stadium on the Wheaton campus in Norton, Mass.

The Judges improve to 6-3-3 on the season, while the Lyons slip to 3-9-1.

Brandeis dominated possession for the majority of the match and was able to keep the ball in the Wheaton defensive zone due to a decisive 10-0 advantage in corner kicks.

The Lyons had kept the Judges off the board for nearly the first 44 minutes of the opening half until Brandeis broke through with 66 seconds left in the stanza to take a 1-0 edge. First year midfielder Zareena Mann (San Ramon, Calif./California) threaded a cross to the middle of the box, where Sansone ripped a shot into the far left corner for her first lifetime marker.

Wheaton had a chance to get on the board early in the opening half when junior forward Lily Brown sent a ball into the box, where sophomore midfielder Raquel Garces converged on the ball with the Judges' keeper, but was unable to get a quality shot off in the 12th minute of action.

Brandeis looked to add an insurance goal in the 66th minute of play when senior forward Yasla Ngoma (North Plainfield, N.J./Oak Knoll) fired a shot on net, but was denied by Lyon sophomore keeper Patricia Bandrup. Senior forward Charlotte TeKrony (Aldie, Va./James Champe) was there for the rebound in the right post, but Bandrup stopped her as well before sophomore back Briar Grady (Natick, Mass./Natick) also fired a rebound shot that found the back of the net, but the goal was called off due to an offsides violation.

The Judges had another chance in the 70th minute, but senior forward Sydney Lenhart's (Tuscon, Ariz./Salpointe Catholic) header off a corner kick sailed over the crossbar to keep it a one-goal affair. Lenhart looked to score again just 72 seconds later with another shot from the right post that Bandrup turned away with a dive to her right.

Bandrup finished with nine saves for Wheaton, while first year goalie Amaya Logan (Jacksonville, Fla./Creekside) stopped all four shots she faced to record her first career shutout in her first collegiate start for Brandeis.

The Lyons return to action on Saturday, October 14 when they host Mount Holyoke College in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference play at Mirrione Stadium at 1:00 p.m., while the Judges host University of Chicago on the same day at 11:00 a.m. in University Athletic Association action.
