Lopez tosses rain-shortened complete game as Judges defeat Anna Maria, 9-1

Box Score

WALTHAM, Mass. – Brandeis University graduate student Tim Lopez (Brooklyn, N.Y./East Side Community) threw a complete game today, the first of his career, as the Judges defeated Anna Maria College, 9-1, in a five-inning baseball game called due to rain and lightning. The Judges improve to 10-3 with the win, while the AMCats fall to 12-7.

Brandeis defeated AMC despite getting outhit, 9-5, as the Judges drew six walks and saw two hit batsmen, while Lopez did not walk or hit a batter. He struck out two and gave up nine hits, but only one for extra-bases, a solo home run by Anna Maria's Adam Twitchell leading off the third inning. Lopez improved to 3-0 on the season, winning his fourth-straight decision dating back to last year.

Brandeis had scored all the runs they would need without the benefit of a hit in the bottom of the first, as two walks, two hit batters, three wild pitches, and a passed ball helped sophomore Sam Nugent (Mansfield, Mass./Mansfield) and senior Mike Khoury (E. Bridgewater, Mass./E. Bridgewater) come around to score.

After Twitchell's homer, Brandeis batted around in the bottom of the third, scoring six times on just three hits. The big blows were a two-run double by senior Dan Frey (Ipswich, Mass./St. John's Prep) and an RBI single by sophomore Drew Michaud (Madison, Conn./Xavier). The Judges closed out the scoring with a single run in the fourth thanks to a Luke Hall (Georgetown, Mass./Georgetown) walk, a Frey single, and another passed ball.

Frey had the big offensive game for Brandeis, going 2-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Nugent, Khoury, and Hall all scored two runs despite just one hit between them, as they drew four walks and were twice hit by pitches. For Anna Maria, in addition to Twitchell with his home run, James Powers was 3-3 and Nick Morley went 2-2. Joe Dorman shouldered the loss, allowing five runs (three earned) in two innings of work. He gave up two hits, walked three, and hit two batters, finishing with three strikeouts.

Brandeis is back in action on Saturday at 12 noon with a doubleheader against Lasell. The Judges and AMCats are slated to meet again next Wednesday at 3 p.m.
