Baseball bats awaken in 12-6 win to get series split with NYU

Box Score

BROOKLYN, N.Y. – The Brandeis University baseball team scored a season-high 12 runs on 17 hits – also a season-best – as the Judges defeated NYU, 12-6, to secure a split of a four-game University Athletic Association series at MCU Park at Coney Island in Brooklyn.

The Judges wasted little time in breaking through this afternoon, as their first four batters registered hits. Rookie 2B Victor Oppenheimer (West Hills, Calif./Chaminade) got the scoring started with an RBI double, followed by a run-producing single from classmate LF Dan O'Leary (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield) and a fielder's choice by senior RF Anthony Nomakeo (Westfield, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon). Brandeis ended up leaving two on in the inning, but they were staked to a 3-0 lead.

Senior Liam Coughlin (Townsend, Mass./Lowell Catholic) took advantage of the lead, holding the Violets to just two hits over six innings of work. NYU was able to score an unearned run in the third on a walk and two errors. The hosts cut the Brandeis lead to one in the fifth on their first hit against Coughlin, as Jack Walter's single after a walk and a hit batter made it 3-2, Brandeis.

Brandeis broke things open in the seventh inning, when they scored eight runs – more than they had in any previous game this season – on seven hits. Oppenheimer delivered the second of his three doubles of the game, driving in two runs, and O'Leary followed with a two-bagger of his own. Nomakeo singled to make it 6-2. Three batters later, rookie catcher Jacob Stone (Natick, Mass./Natick) singled home two runs.

After NYU called on reliever Matthew Millus, their third pitcher of the inning, senior CF Ryan Tettemer (Westfield, Mass./Suffield Acad.) drove a ball to the right-center field gap with the outfield playing shallow. Tettemer circled the bases for an inside-the-park three-run home run. The homer was his first of the season and seventh of his career, making it 11-2, Brandeis.

NYU scored two runs against the Judge bullpen in the eighth and ninth innings, while rookie Shea Nugent (Nahant, Mass./Tilton School) drove in Brandeis's final run in the top of the ninth.

For Brandeis, the big bats were Oppenheimer (3-5, 2 R, 3 RBI, 3 2B), Tettemer (2-5, 3 R, 3 RBI, HR) and rookie 3B Tim Lopez (Brooklyn, N.Y./East Side Community) (4-6, 3 R, 2B). Coughlin earned his first win of the season (1-3) after allowing just two hits and two runs (one earned) in six innings. Coughlin struck out one and walked four.

Brandeis (3-15, 2-10 UAA) is at Bridgewater State on Wednesday afternoon for a road contest before hosting Washington University for a four-game UAA series next weekend. NYU (14-9, 3-5 UAA) travels to Atlanta to meet Emory in a conference series next weekend as well.
