Baseball drops 17-3 decision to WashU

Box Score

SANFORD, Fla. –  The Brandeis University baseball team dropped its fourth contest of the 2016 University Athletic Association (UAA) tournament, falling to Washington University, 17-3, in Historic Sanford Stadium. The Judges drop to 4-3 overall, 1-3 in the UAA, while the Bears improve to 9-3, 3-1 UAA and remain in a tie for first place in the league.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Washington scored runs in five of their seven turns at the plate, batting around in the first, to take a 6-0 lead, and in the fifth to go ahead, 14-1.
  • The Judges scored one run in the third on an RBI single by senior CF Liam O'Connor (Avon, Conn./Avon).
  • They added two more in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI groundout by junior SS Jay Schaff (Cheshire, Conn./Xavier) and a single by senior 1B Greg Heineman (Wilbraham, Mass. / Minnechaug), but it wasn't enough to avoid the UAA's 10-run rule.

FOR THE JUDGES - HITTERS

  • Senior RF Ryan Healy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) had two of the Judges' five hits.
  • Senior LF Max Hart (Montville, Conn. / Montville) scored two of the squad's three runs.

FOR THE JUDGES - PITCHERS

  • Junior Anthony Nomakeo (Westfield, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon) suffered the loss in 4.1 innings of work. It was his second start of the season.
  • Rookie Daniel Schupper (Villanova, Pa./Harriton) tossed 2.2 innings of relief

FOR THE BEARS

  • WashU rapped out a season-high 17 hits from 11 different players. Ten Bear players had at least one RBI on the night.
  • Shortstop Austin Darmawan went 3-6 with two RBI and two runs scored.
  • LF Christian Santos was 3-3 with a walk, three runs scored and two RBI.
  • RF Connor O'Hara had the game's only extra-base hit, a double.
  • Zach Kotin allowed just two hits and one unearned run in five innings to pick up the win.
