O'Neill pitches Brandeis baseball to 8-1 win over NYU

SANFORD, Fla. – Brandeis University sophomore Sean O'Neill (Reading, Mass./Reading Memorial) tossed eight innings of three-hit ball today as the Judges defeated NYU, 8-1, in the second game of the 2016 University Athletic Association (UAA) tournament at Historic Sanford Memorial Stadium. The Judges improve to 4-1 overall, 1-1 in the UAA, while the Violets drop to 2-5, 0-2 UAA.

O'NEILL DOMINATES

  • O'Neill made his first start of 2016 and allowed just three hits over eight innings of work, striking out a career-high nine Violets.
  • He walked one and hit a batter in the first inning, then retired 11 in a row.
  • O'Neill allowed his first hit in the fifth, a two-out single to 3B Christian Bloom.
  • In the sixth, he allowed a lead-off triple to CF Jack Walter, then retired the next two batters before surrendering an RBI double to LF Adrian Spitz.
  • After stranding Spitz at third, O'Neill retired the last seven NYU hitters in a row, including three by way of strikeout.
  • O'Neill has now pitched at least seven innings in eight of his nine career starts, tossing eight frames in four of those starts.
  • His previous career strikeout high was six, achieved twice, including in a meeting against NYU last season.
  • This was O'Neill's fourth career start against NYU, and he improved to 3-1 with a 2.03 ERA and 19 Ks against the Violets.

JUDGES AT THE PLATE

  • Brandeis scored runs in six of their nine at-bats, putting up two runs in the second and ninth and single runs in innings 1, 5, 6 and 7.
  • Senior 1B Greg Heineman (Wilbraham, Mass./Minnechaug) led the way at the plate, going 3-4 with two RBI and a run scored.
  • Heineman hit his first home run of the season and the Judges' first of the campaign to lead off the fifth inning. It was his fourth career round tripper.
  • Senior Ryan Healy (Carlsbad, Calif./La Costa Canyon) did double duty, going 2-5 with two runs scored and a double at the plate, then coming in to pitch the ninth inning, recording two strikeouts.
  • Junior transfer 3B Marvic Gomez (Providence, R.I. / Juanita Sanchez) recorded two hits in his second start with the Judges with a run scored and an RBI.
  • Senior catcher Connor Doyle (Avon, Conn./Avon Old Farms) was 1-3 with two runs scored and an RBI on a perfect suicide squeeze in the seventh inning.

INSIDE THE BOX SCORE

  • The Judges' eight runs came on nine hits as they took advantage of seven walks and five errors.
  • They also stole four bases, one each by Healy, Doyle, Gomez and senior CF Liam O'Connor (Avon, Conn./Avon), their most in a game since April 7, 2014.
  • NYU's Colman Hendershot suffered the loss for the Violets after going five innings and giving up four runs (two earned) on just three hits , but surrendering five walks and Heineman's home run.
