Volleyball finishes in eighth place at UAA Championships

ROCHESTER, N.Y.  – The Brandeis University volleyball team closed its 2015 season this weekend at the University Athletic Association championships. The Judges dropped a 3-0 decision to top-ranked Emory in the quarterfinals of the tournament, then were swept by #21 Carnegie Mellon in the consolation bracket semis. The Judges won the first set of the seventh-place match, but ultimately fell to NYU, 3-1. The Judges' season concludes with a 5-27 record.

RESULTS

  • QUARTERFINALS: #1 Emory 3, Brandeis 0 (25-14, 25-9, 25-14)
  • CONSOLATION SEMIFINALS: #21 Carnegie Mellon 3, Brandeis 0 (25-15, 25-16, 25-20)
  • SEVENTH PLACE MATCH: NYU 3, Brandeis 1 (21-25, 25-16, 25-14, 25-12)

VS. NYU

  • For the second time this season, the Judges took the first set off of the Violets, but they could not hold the momentum.
  • After a tournament-best .135 hitting percentage in the first set, which Brandeis won, 25-21, they only broke even in one of the final three sets.
  • Rookie outside hitter Grace Krumpack (Cincinnati, Ohio / Colerain) led the team with a match-high 10 kills and added 12 digs, one shy of a match-best. It was the second double-double of her career.
  • Rookie libero Yvette Cho (San Diego, Calif. / Rancho Bernardo) led all players with 13 digs and also had  three service aces.
  • Rookie setter Leah Pearlman (El Paso, Texas/El Paso) tallied 16 assists and had seven digs.
  • Senior Summer Koop (Long Valley, N.J. / West Morris Central) had a team-high .364 hitting percentage (6 K-2 E-11 TA) in her final match.
  • NYU owned an 8-1 advantage in blocks and had 39 kills with just 13 attack errors in 107 attempts for a .243 team hitting percentage.

VS. CARNEGIE MELLON

  • Senior Maddie Engeler (Huron, Ohio / St. Mary Central Catholic) led the all players with eight kills. Only one other player in the match had more than six.
  • Cho finished with 13 digs, while Rookie setter Marlee Nork (Chicago, Ill. / Walter Payton College Prep) had nine assists, both team-highs.
  • #21 CMU delivered seven service aces to four for the Judges. The Tartans also had a 10-3 edge in blocks.

VS. EMORY

  • Sophomore outside hitter Jessie Moore (Rye, N.Y./Rye) led the team in kills against top-ranked Emory with six, while Engeler had five.
  • Cho had eight digs and Nork had 11 assists to lead the Judges.
  • The Eagles had a phenomenal .386 team hitting percentage, while producing 43 digs to the Judges' 29.
