Chuang, Morse goals power Men’s Soccer past MIT, 2-1

WALTHAM, Mass. – The Brandeis University men's soccer team scored early and then again late in the second half to rally for a 2-1 victory over MIT on Saturday afternoon at Gordon Field.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brandeis opened the scoring just 17 seconds into the match when senior Aidan Chuang (New York, N.Y./Milton Acad.) found the back of the net for his second goal of the season.
  • The Engineers and Judges traded chances throughout the opening half, with Brandeis holding a 10-9 advantage in shots and a 5-3 edge in shots on goal.
  • The Judges created several opportunities in the opening half, including shots on goal from senior Keller Chamovitz (Sewickly, Pa./Quaker Valley), senior Maddox Yu (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield), junior Charlie Culbert (Twickenham, England/Conestoga (Pa.)) and junior Jacob Morse (Framingham, Mass./St. George's School (R.I.)), but MIT goalkeeper Paolo Mangiafico turned them aside.
  • MIT pulled even in the 57th minute when Woods Windham scored a header set up by Brayden Schnitzer and Ilya Davydov.
  • Brandeis quickly responded with the game-winning goal in the 67th minute. Sophomore Langston Byrd (Austin, Texas/NYC School (N.Y.)) set up Morse, who finished with a low shot to put the Judges back in front, 2-1.
  • The Judges continued to pressure MIT in the closing minutes, with Byrd forcing a save in the 73rd minute and a blocked shot in the 81st minute. First-year Gavin Foley (Watertown, Mass./Watertown) added another chance in the 89th minute, but his shot went just wide.
  • Judges' first-year goalkeeper Gianni Nrecaj (Kinnelon, N.J./Kinnelon) and the Brandeis defense held off the Engineers' late pressure to secure the 2-1 victory.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
  • Brandeis outshot MIT, 20-16, and held an 8-6 advantage in shots on goal. The Judges also earned six corner kicks compared to three for the Engineers.
  • Nrecaj made five saves for Brandeis, while Mangiafico stopped six shots for MIT in the losing effort.
  • Morse led the Judges with two shots on goal, while Chamovitz, Foley and Byrd each recorded three shots.

  • The Judges finish their three-game homestand against Wesleyan University on Tuesday, Sept. 15, at 7 p.m at Gordon Field.
