Baseball tramples Mammoths, 11-1

AMHERST, Mass. – The Brandeis University baseball team stepped out of conference for a midweek contest today, and the Judges rolled past host Amherst College, 11-1, on the road.

TEAM RECORDS
  • Brandeis: 12-10.
  • Amherst: 15-6.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Judges outslugged the Mammoths, 13-7, and took advantage of six walks and three hit batters to pick up the win.
  • A passed ball in the first inning plated sophomore 1B Danny Tambascia (Newton, Mass./Newton North) to open the scoring.
  • A Bobby Quill (Raynham, Mass./Bridgewater-Raynham Regional) RBI single in the second provided the game-winning run, and a sacrifice fly by sophomore 3B Ben Kuja (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand) and a second passed ball made it a 4-0 game.
  • The Judges blew things open with five runs on three hits in the fourth inning, with the big blow a bases-clearing double by junior RF Henry Aronwald (Rye Brook, N.Y./Trinity Pawling). Junior CF Connor Crowley (Guilford, Conn./Notre Dame-West Haven) added an RBI single, and Quill was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to extend the lead to 9-0.
  • Sophomore DH Colby Harrington (West Springfield, Mass./West Springfield) plated a run in the fifth and first-year SS Noah Koong (Sammamish, Wash./Eastlake) drove one in in the seventh to help the Judges complete a seven-inning win.
  • Aronwald's three RBI led the Judges, while sophomore catcher Keith Lee (Milford, Mass./Milford) had a team-high three hits. Eight of the nine Brandeis starters had a hit and all nine reached safely at least once. Tambascia, Lee and Quill each scored two runs.
  • Aronwald's double was the only extra-base hit for the Judges, while Crowley had the lone stolen base.
  • The Judges used a pitcher-by-committee to limit the Mammoths to one run, with first-year Tyler Chen (Livingston, N.J./Livingston) starting and throwing 2.1 innings to earn the win. He allowed two hits and walked two for his first collegiate victory. Four Brandeis relievers limited the Mammoths to five hits and one earned run over the final 4.1 frames.
  • With the win, the Judges have matched their win total from last season with 14 games left on the schedule.
UP NEXT
  • The Judges will host University Athletic Association rivals NYU for a four-game series this weekend starting Friday afternoon at 3 p.m. on Stein Diamond.
